Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to force print?

I need a report to only print page 1 without user intervention. Is there a way to do this in xbasic?

Rupert, do you mean just print without a preview? or do you mean, stop after page one and get user info?

      Martin,
I am having problems with some reports ejecting a second blank page. It tends to vary by printer, and the one way I have found to stop this, is to set the page print to one (see attached).

        RE: How to force print?

        Rupert,

blank pages, every other page, are almost always caused by elements in your layout, or the layout itself, being too large to fit entirely with the printable area on your paper.

Most modern printers cannot print near the edges of a sheet of paper. A minimum 'margin' is required along each edge. This will vary from printer to printer. If your printer's minimum required margins are 0.5 inches a standard layout of 8.5" x 11" will not 'fit' on an 8.5" x 11" sheet. The layout must fit within the printable zone, which in this instance would be 7.5" x 10". See what I mean ?

          RE: How to force print?

          Tom,
Thanks Tom, but I'm well aware of the printable area and margins. I can print a specific report processed on the same PC to a HP LaserJet 1200, and a Brother HL 1440 (both current model printers) and will get a second page feed on the HP and not the Brother. I currently work with four printers for testing, 2 models of HP, Minolta, and Brother. With the exception of the HPLJ 5, these printers are less than a year old. The results of printing the same document can vary (extra page) between printers.

I just want to figure a way to stop this. Checking the page = 1 on the print property screen is the only way I have found to stop this nightmare. Several of my users have started to manually check the box, but I don't feel they should have to do this.

            Rupert,

If it were me, I'd double check the boundaries of the report layout, and all objects located in the layout.

If the margins were increased somewhat all the way round does the problem continue ?

What Tom suggested has always worked for me. I do an awful lot with selecting printers and setting their properties w/o user intervention, and with the functions available now I know of no way to set it to print only page 1 (though of course one can bring up the options and set it manually, as you already know).

What Tom said is exactly right, and since the extra sheet varies from printer to printer it is the nature of the beast, the different printers have different minimum margins.

                  RE: How to force print?

Rupert, Windows XP caused some things to change. As I understand it, Microsoft made all the companies write new drivers for their printers - especially HP who was notorious for changing Windows DLLS and causing mucho grief for many programs.

With my HP Office Jet R60, reports that printed perfectly on 98/ME would not print correctly on XP, using .5 for all margins. The quick fix I found was to select "trim" - and this caused almost all problems to disappear.

If that doesn't work, it is definitely a page length issue - otherwise only one page would print.

I can well appreciate your frustration when writing one app that runs on different systems, OS's, printers, etc.

                    Try this:

In the report properties dialog / Page tab

At the bottom is the Overflow Data section.

Set it to Shrink data to fit on page and see if this makes life easier.
