Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Copy Appearance/Copy Format

Working pp 205-207 in Pace manual dealing with above topics.

Formatting individual field works just fine, but the 'appearance' will not copy to other fields (one or more).

Cannot find 'Copy Format' or maybe I cannot yet find the Design Toolbar...????

    Still working on it!

      RE: Copy Appearance/Copy Format

      Highlight a field
Right click on it and select copy properties
Select another field or bunch of fields
Right click and select paste properties

Next thing to try is the advanced copy. You should be able to figure this one out.- Works more or less the same.

OK -- i guess that you are using the word 'properties' to mean the same as 'appearance'..??

When I follow your instructions (same as book, by the way) I cannot get the 'paste' to work...

I can go to any field and modify the appearance thru the 'properties' window and they will change. Cannot get the changes to apply to other fields using the 'copy appearance and paste appearance' functions.

Not a big deal (NOW or YET) but I feel that it should work.

          RE: Copy Appearance/Copy Format

          OK -- Here's the latest....

Went back and re-created the custom browse from scratch...

This time, the drop down box looked different when trying to copy appearance from one field to another....

At first, the copy would not work when using the 'right click' drop down box.

Then went to advanced and copied properties, this worked.

Then reset everything and went to the 'Copy Format Toolbar' and that worked OK too....

Only the 'right click' drop down box would not work....

Now that I know that, I won't try to use it... use the others..

No idea what was different in the browse, UNLESS it was the fact that I operated with the control panel maximized, which automatically maximizes the browse. (Unlikely) Or the fact that at times (earlier) there would be several tiles of the browse in the background which I would just close.... Don't know how they got there???

          Problem solved.
          Thanx

            RE: Copy Appearance/Copy Format

In general, its a good practice, when in design mode for a form, and or field rules or structure for a table, to have ALL tables and forms closed, except the one you are working on.

To learn how to copy properties, open a default form for one of your tables - go to design mode, right click on one of the object labels, and change the font property to a bigger size - then right click on that object, and copy appearance, and then highlight several other object labels, right click and paste appearance.

A label object(the title for a field object on your form) has properties - font, font size, font color, alignment, border(color). Together these are the "appearance" of the object.

But a field object has more properties - like tab stop(t/f), hide, disable, etc. But these are not part of the object's "appearance" - so to copy appearance does not copy the tabstop selection.

But after you get comfortable copying appearance, you can right click on a field object, copy appearance, go to the pencil on the toolbar at the top of the form, which brings down a small "copy appearancece toolbar" - if you click on the last pencil on the right, you can paste the appearance to ALL objects of the same type on the form, in one operation.

When you get comfortable with that, right click on a field object, select advanced, and ALL of the properties for the object will be displayed, and you have the option of selecting one or more of the settings for that field object to copy - like tabstop, and then you can highlight several other objects on the form, right click, advanced, and pastes selected properties. Like setting all the tabstops for several objects to false.

              Thanx for the tips.
Once that I got thru the problem, I did all of the above and found out how everything works.
Interesting how many different facets of properties that there are!!!! Many things that you would not consider when first looking at a field and its data.

              thanx again
