Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I have a table that has the following statistics:
    9741 records
    118 fields
    19 indexes
    8,351,847 bytes

When I try to edit a record in this table, I have about a 5-7 second wait before I can begin typing.

I have another table that has the following statistics:
    3673 records
    40 fields
    8 indexes
    2,175,730 bytes
When I edit a record in this table, response is almost instant.

Where do I need to begin to look to rid myself of the 5-7 second wait?

    Thanks
    Tony

You have a filter, or query assigned to the table. It is running this before the table opens. Check form properties for a filter and remove it.

      Russ
My forms and browses do not have filters or queries in the properties of the individual form or browse.
My menu that calls the form or browse, does have a index.set command or :browse.view(queried)command.

However, the table that edits quickly also has the index.set command.

      Thanks

        RE: Speed

        Here's a few thoughts:
If you open up the default form or browse and try to change a field is it still slow? Is it that slow when no one else is on the network?
Is the form based on a set?
        Is referential integrity involved?
        Are you optimized?
Are there graphics on the form or in the table?
If you disable virus control does it get faster?
Did you try compacting the database?
Is it slow on all workstations?
In the network settings, do you have a refresh time?

          John,

I need some guidance here as well. We have been running A4V6 for years and response time has never been an issue on a 5 user Lan running Windows Me. In tests with A5V5 indexing seems to be creating a real drag on response time. Even a simple zip table lookup wants to re-create an index although I have deleted all filter, queries and indexes for this table except for "zip".

What's the deal with "referential integrity"? Is it smoke? I used this religiously in Alpha4 and had great database integrity. Compacting databases is a new term for an old Alpha4 user -- can you point me to a thread on this topic. Same is true for "optimized".

I've seen a few topics on "checking indexes" and index integrity items. A5V5 has been a real challenge with this particular topic. Are there some secrets about database and index integrity rules that are not apparent to us A4 fans?

            RE: Speed

            Tony,

To me, the thing that sticks out concerning your situation on the slow table is the large number of indexes. My personal practice is to use the absolute minimum number required for data entry. i.e. indexes the user will need to navigate during data entry.

When filtering is needed later on in the app, for a report or a special view for a form, I use queries instead. If you're working on a LAN the large number of open index files would be especially worrisome to me.

You don't mention much about the forms used to display or edit your data. Complex sets, and sets using referential integrity, tend to open and run more slowly.

              Deb,

              visit the online documentation:

              http://support.alphasoftware.com/xbasic_reference/index.htm

Search for "compact" (omit quotes), choose 'database compact'.

Search for "optimize" (omit quotes), choose 'network optimization"
