Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    mpx files all over desk top

    Hello

    I am a new user and I have just recently installed patch_full_1494_1049 and now I am getting a good amount of mpx files on my desk top. It seems to be about every second or third time that I exit the program. It is stated that the program should erase these files, but it is not every time. Shut-downs have been all normal. Does anyone know how to stop this and if not how can I get them to dump into a file that I can discard more easily then cleaning up my desk-top??

    Thx

    Bruce,

    I don't know if it is a 'solution' as I think there is some problem with .mpx files. Following Selwyn's procedure in a discussion a phorum page or two back, this is what I did.

    Under Setings, Directories, Private Path: uncheck use windows temp folder and put in a path such as C:\a5mpx\
    (make sure the folder you use actually exists)
    Under Settings Queries check Delete all queries box

    Now the *.mpx files seem to be deleted when I shut down. I would guess that you can set the path in the private directory to whatever you want.

      This can also happen if you start the program by double clicking a shortcut that is on your desktop, but only if the 'Start In' directory is blank in the properties of the shortcut. If this is your situation, change the properties of the shortcut so that the Start In directory setting is not blank. If it's a shortcut to an ADB file, insert the actual path to the ADB. If it's a shortcut to the Alpha Five program itself, insert the physical path to the Alpha5 EXE file.

          RE: mpx files all over desk top

          I have not had the problems with the mpx files until the latest patch after which I got lots. I tried the fixes outlined above by Tom and Phil which seems to have taken care of it.
          With a private path specified (as opposed to C:\temp) with very little testing Alpha now appears to delete the mpx files when properly closed. However now I am getting .asx, .alb,.alm.alx files in this specified path. The .asx files which don't seem to be listed in the A5 file list ($$*.asx) appear to be query definitions.
          It makes sense to have these in the private directory. It also makes sense to have the the .alb, .alm, and .alx files in the private directory in as much as they contain private (user) defined information. The problem is that I now seem to be collecting these various file types in different locations. Perhaps if the private directory is changed there should be some provision to note or delete these files that are in the old path.
          I had assumed that it was OK to delete anything with a $$ in front of it but if the $$*.asx files are saved queries I would not want to delete them. Can someone confirm that this is what they are and whether they are redundant and can be deleted?

          Thanks,
          Russ

            I have the same problem too, my desktop shows nothing but .mpx files.

            I am developing and application as of right now. I don't mind deleting the .mpx files from the desktop every half hour, as long as there is going to be a fixed for this problem in upcoming patches.

            Is there going to be a fixed???

              Hi Mario,
              How have you been?
              I have found that if you put in the private path it removes the mpx's as long as there are no crashes or other events to strand them. They still seem to collect though if mistakes are made. (of course I never make mistakes :) ) What's odd is where they are showing up.

                I put in both fixes from Phil De Gruy and Tom Cone Jr. It seems to be doing the trick. It did stop the desk top mess not sure if I have other problems I need to do a lot more testing. Again thanks for the advice

                  There was a thread on this problem a short while ago that you can check out. Search for "Problems with Build 1494_1049 Full Version" That is the full title of the thread.

                  Most users are not having the problem, however there are some common conditions that can cause it. Most are related to opening either Alpha or the database with a shortcut. A couple errors there and you will be putting mpx files in very odd places.

                    I already change the private path to C:\mpxs
                    After playing with my application I noticed that what is causing the .mpx files in my desktop is the following event:
                    I have a form with a menu with an option called "Control Panel".
                    "Control Panel" conntains the following code:

                    pass=ui_get_password("PASSWORD","Enter Password","","?")

                    if alltrim(pass)="11223" then
                    ControlPanel.Show()
                    parentform.Close()
                    else
                    ui_msg_box("PASSWORD","Wrong Password",UI_STOP_SYMBOL)
                    end if
                    end

                    This piece of code is the one generating the .mpx 's on my desktop.

                    I will try different things to see if I can make it stop doing that.

                    Any ideas???

                        Mario

                        I have almost the exact same code on a menu form (different password) and it causes no problems.

                        check = ui_get_password("Password","Enter password","","*")
                        if check "mypassword"
                        end
                        end if
                        :controlpanel.show()
                        :controlpanel.restore()
                        parentform.Close()

                        In my own experience and extensive testing the only way I could get mpx files on the desktop was to open either A5 or the database from a shortcut on the desktop with no StartIn path listed in the shortcut.

                          I do open A5 from a shortcut. I will try to open A5 from the actual file and see if it helps.
                          Will do more testing tomorrow at work.

                            Ok, by changing the "Start in" on the Alpha shortcut I was able to get rid of the .mpx's on my desktop. Now A5 is putting them in my Alpha5 directory.
                            And still when closing A5 it is not getting rid of them.

                            All I can hope is for a fix on the next patch.

                              This may sound a little odd, but if you are using a shortcut on the desktop to open A5, set the start in path on the shortcut to the same path in A5 settings for the private path. This should put the mpx files in the private path. If they are there, A5 will delete them when the program closes.
