Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    expression problem

    Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the syntax of the expression below? I have built similar expressions successfully, but the expression editor tells me that the expression below is incomplete. The problem appears to develop when I include the .AND. statement. I dont know if Im missing something in the expression or if I have run into a bug.

    IF(ISBLANK("End_Time"),"",JDATE()-JDATE(CTOD("01/01/"+CYEAR(DATE())))+1+RIGHT(CYEAR(DATE()),2)+IF(VAL(LEFT(TOTIME(END_TIME_SECONDS,1,0),2))=2,"B","A"))))

    The expression compiles a character string for a calculated field, Prod_Period. The value of the field is a character string comprised of a date value and a time value. The time value is expressed as a letter that designates a two hour period. End_Time is a character field that records the time of day, formatted as HH:MM AM. End_Time_Seconds is a calculated field that converts the value of End_Time to the number of seconds after midnight. With enough IF() statements, the expression will return a different letter for each two hour period in a twenty-four hour day.

    RE: expression problem

    Jeff,

    Does the first part of the expression run correctly?

    I could be way off here but I'm wondering if it isn' the way your trying to arrive at the answer by adding if statements together and combining the .AND. with another if statement. Make sense? Instead of saying, if this do that + if this, do that, why not use an .and. instead of +. Are you intending to add the results of the if statements?

    Try breaking it down and see if each if statement works properly. If so, then it's the +'s and/or the .AND. that's the problem.

    WE need to know more about what you're trying to accomplish.

      RE: expression problem

      Jeff, try building the expression without nesting other calc fields. i.e. don't use 'End_Time_Seconds' but recompute the seconds value inside the expression.

        RE: expression problem

        Jeff,

        The equation is as simple as;

        ltrim(str(date()-CTOD("01/01/"+CYEAR(DATE()))+1))+RIGHT(CYEAR(DATE()),2)+
        SUBSTR("ABCDEFGHIJKL",int(TOSECONDS(END_TIME)/7200)+1,1)

        There are other variants that could be simplier, but the letter choices can be changed to your liking. 7200 is the number of seconds in 2 hours

        Personally, I don't like using JDATE in expressions as it is not used by A5 programmers as much. A5's date arithmetic and functions are quite strong without it.

          RE: expression problem

          Hi Ken:

          The first part of the statement works. The portions of the statement that are linked with "+" signs build a character string. The .AND. statements are part of the argument in the IF() statement that select the letter "A" or the letter "B" to be included in the resulting character string.

          The purpose of this is to compile a manufacturing code that records a date value and a time value. To arrive at a time value, the period from 24:00 to 01:59 is assigned a letter "A". The period from 02:00 to 03:59 is assigned a letter "B" and so forth until the last two hours of the day, 22:00 to 23:59 are assigned the letter "L". For 09:05 on September 17, 2003, the resulting character string should read 26003E.

            RE: expression problem

            Hi Tom:

            I tried computing the seconds within the expression, but the resulting expression was so long that I received an error message stating that the execution stack was full. That's when I decided to try the calculated field, "End_Time_Seconds". The full expression will give 1 of twelve letter values for each two hour period in a day, so it's pretty long.

              Ira:

              Thanks for the equation. I wanted to use a mathematical equation at the beginning, but I was have trouble figuring it out. So, I hit on the idea of using the nested IF() statements. It's late, so I'll take a run at it with your solution in the AM.

                Ira:

                Thank you for a clever solution to my problem expression. I knew that there had to be a simpler solution to this particular problem. The SUBSTR() component is a much cleaner approach to assigning a letter value to the production period.

                You can probably tell from my approach to the problem that I am not a professional developer. However, that is one of the great things about A5. One can do a lot without being a pro.

                Best regards,
                Jeff Pearson

                  Jeff,

                  You're more than welcome. And you are correct. A5 does allow a non-programmer to actually produce some incredible, workable applications and solutions.

                  Nevertheless, consider hiring a developer when required (or your head is bruised banging it against the proverbial wall!!).

                  The message board can help you along and give you direction, but typically can't do it for you.
