Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Autoexec script won't fire

My autoexec script won't fire. The application it is in is based on the Order Entry template. So I deleted the auotexec script in my application and copied the one back in from the Order Entry template. It still won't fire. If I run it manually from the control panel, it works. Anybody got any ideas??

Verify that the autoexec is set to fire in settings. Open View, Settings, Preferences and check that "Execute the Autoexec" is either Yes or blank (blank is default, which is yes)

Checked the setting earlier. It was blank. I changed it to yes. Still not firing.

Try running debug() on it. Occasionally I've seen problems where a script doesn't run for some reason but it also doesn't generate an error. By adding a Debug(1) line to the beginning of your script you can find out if it really isn't running or if some type of error is occurring.

Thanks for the response, Cal. After posting the message, I went to my Code tab and discovered that all my scripts had disappeared! Admittedly, I had been hacking the .alb file, so that may explain it. I solved my problem by creating a new database with the same name and copying all the database objects (tables, sets, and other non-application files) to this new database. This completely resolved all difficulties.

What is hacking the .alb file? Does that mean that you were using alpha techniques to change the .alb or you were bypassing Alpha to edit the .alb directly?

              Al,

I edited it directly using notepad by comparing it to a previous version that I had that was from a backup. I had done too many changes since that backup so I did not want to simply restore.

By the way, what are "Alpha techniques" used to change the .alb file?

Alpha has methods for changing the database files, Adding/deleting a table to the database, working with global variables, adding/changing scripts, and so on.

Manually editing one of these files with an editing tool is almost certainly going to destroy the inter-relationship within the group of files that comprise the database structure. The .abd, .alb, .alm, .alx need to be treated as a single file. If something changes in one file it probably changes in another file if not in all of the files.

The files are dbase files themselves and have pointers and counters that are used internally that even Alpha doesn't have control over.

Thanks for mentioning that the files were hacked, but that should have been the first thing put back when the failure occurred. Unless you use a very savvy dbase editing tool, the chances of corruption are very good. And even then, Alpha can't be asked to support or explain it after.
