Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memo Field Not Holding Data

There has been many discussions in the forum on this subject and now I am experiencing a memo problem which may be the same as previously posted.

I have a set with the memo field in the Parent table. The set is one to many and the input form is based on the set and is modal.

Up until mid July I could put data into the memo field and it stayed, however, today when inputting new items, using the form, the data I place in the memo field will not stay.

Data inputted earlier in July is still there, however, if I try to add additional text to that data the additional text disappears when exiting the form.

    Hi Alan,

I have this from time to time. Do a backup then compact the DB and see if this works. It works for me.

Make the memo field "always modeless" in properties. Then add text to it in the memo editor (click on the pencil).Click save and the text should save. If you add it directly to the memo field it may not save.
I have found this problem also and this is the workaround I am currently using. In earlier releases this worked differently so I am hoping it is fixed in an upcoming patch.

Let me know if this works for you as apparently others are not seeing this issue.

        Russ,

Sorry for the delay in replying. Changed the memo field to always modeless and works perfectly.

Thanks, and hope others will pick up on this.

RE: Memo Field Not Holding Data

I am having the same problem, but I am trying to post from a memo field in one table to a memo field in another with an operation - no sets involved and I am not trying to enter from a form. The only records that are being filled are those that have more than 256 characters of data. Shorter fields will not fill. I tried to back up and compact - it worked once but now the problem is back and compacting does not help.

That's an interesting problem. I've never run into a solution that requires posting memo data from one table to another.

I'm wondering if a different solution might fit you needs better. On the other hand I may learn a whole lot more about memos and postings.

RE: Memo Field Not Holding Data

It's a fix of another problem and a probable lack of programming skills.

I had a text file, imported it to Excel, did a lot of work to modify it, saved it as a worksheet which limited cell contents to 255 characters (losing a lot of data, which I didn't discover until I imported it into A5. I didn't want to go back through all the conversion and data cleanup work I had done in Excel. So, I imported the linking field with the text from the origninal text file into a new table as a memo field in A5 and wanted to post it to the A5 field that had been set up as a memo field.

I expect to have this problem in the future as tables are modified and I have to update them for software upgrades so I really do need a fix.

Another option would be to make a set from the two tables and use an update operation on the set.

Or use an update operation on the original table and a lookup function to get the value from the new table.

Call it an odd hunch, but I think an update is a better model to use for your task. Let us know what you resolve.
