Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CONTACT MANAGER

    I purchased the Contact Manager as part of the bundled offer six months ago but have not tried it until recently. I'm getting an unhandled A5 error and the program terminates.
    All I've done is open the app, look up an appointment then as I close the appointment I get the error. I've just re downloaded the app from the Alpha site but have the same error.

    RE: CONTACT MANAGER

    I get the same error. I select Appointments from the Main Menu then press View Contact. When you close Contacts Manager form A5 does a forced termination. This is with build 1491-1048. This only happens when the form is called from the button on the Appointments form. I believe there is a problem with the Open Form with the condition of the records matching. I shall have a look at other apps to see if this also happens.

      RE: CONTACT MANAGER

      I am wrong about the field filter. Works OK in AlphaSports. Problem seems to be with Object Activate.

      If it is removed the Contact Manager form opens then instantly closes. With the following script the form opens but Alpha crashes when the form is closed. This script is generated by Action Scripting.

      'Activate object 'First_name' in Form 'Contact Manager' .
      DIM window_name as C
      window_name = ":"+"Contact Manager"
      DIM varP_Object as p
      'Get a pointer to the specified window
      varP_Object = obj(window_name)
      'Check if the specified window exists
      if .not. is_object(varP_Object) then
      ui_msg_box("Error","The window '"+window_name+"' does not exist.",ui_stop_symbol)
      else
      varP_Object:First_name.activate()
      end if

        RE: CONTACT MANAGER

        Hi Keith,
        Thanks Keith. I'm surprised that no one else has reported this before. At least you have confirmed that it's not just me. I'm afraid that I didn't understand what you were saying. You appear to have identified the problem but can you fix it.
        I'm hoping to use this application within a dept in my company - Oxfam in Oxford (01865 313633)by the way. I've been having problems with out IT dept who don't want us to use Alpha5 and I had hoped that the Contact Manager app would give me a head start as I was going to add other functionalities to it.
        Does this have to be passed on to Selwyn?

          Arthur,

          Sorry I have not fixed the problem. I am sure that it has beed seen by the powers that be. I shall give you a call later today. I am sure we can build a working app without this error.

            RE: CONTACT MANAGER

            OK I have fixed this fault. On the Appointments form, edit the View Contacts Button. Edit the Open Form action. Select the Options Tab. Change to Normal. Problem goes away.

                RE: CONTACT MANAGER

                Not a solution, but a Contact problem. Sorry. Anyhow, importing to A5 was working great - until. I recently upgraded. Had Office '97, now it's XP Office 2000. The OS is 2000 Professional, A5V5, lastest upgrade. Basically, I believe, it's a path problem. However, "outlookApp = ole.create("Outlook.Application.9")" is not working. Neither does 10.
                How does one specify the full path. Of course it's even difficult to find where the contact folder resides. Office has always just distributed the files like it's playing 52 card pickup.

                  RE: CONTACT MANAGER

                  I just imported 246 contacts from Outlook 2002 with no problem. I'm guessing that Microsoft left some registry setting hanging with your upgrade from Office 97 to Office 2000. My machine had a clean install of Office XP Pro.

                  If I find anything I will post in this thread.
