Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"Drop Down List Box" behavior

    "Drop Down List Box" behavior

When I use the "Drop Down List Box" option in the field rules and use a table lookup it does not work correctly if the field is a numeric field.

In the attached example. I have a table called KEYS that looks up a UNIT number from the UNITS.DBF. When I type in the unit "101" I get unit 1010, when I type in "120", I get unit 1201.

I created a second table called KEYS2.DBF which is identical to KEYS.DBF except that I did not select "Drop Down List Box" in the field rules for the field UNIT in the KEYS2.dbf. The lookup works in this table.

The drop down list is doing an auto fill based on the values that are available in the look up table units.

To get 100 to be entered as a value in keys.dbf and 1001 is a match to 100 as it is being entered, you would need to enter 100. ( Or enter 100 )

Then the value of 100 is placed in keys.dbf

Since the non drop list (normal) approach doesn't do an auto fill or a validation (since in the field rules you have allow any value to be entered), it is easier to enter a value of 100 by just typing 100.

What I find interesting is that after entering 100 as a valid lookup item in the table units, the drop down list still auto fills to the 1001 value as 100 is entered, rather than finding 100 in the table.

That seems to be answered by the 100 entry that shows a more character based (or position oriented) approach to the lookup rather than a numeric value approach where it would find the lowest value possible first and then work its way up to higher numeric values.

      RE:

      Al,

Your response did not come out right on the message board. Where you had place brackets around the word "space" the html editor of this message board dropped the word because it was inclosed in "less than" and "greater than" brackets.

Pressing Space does work. For example, enter "100 space" provides the correct entry. A little confusing and most data entry clerks would not catch the error. I just discovered another "Quirk" or "Bug." After you have successfully gotten the drop down box to accept "100" over "1001" and save the record. Place your cursor in the Unit field where you just entered "100." Guess what shows up? - "1001" This is very confusing and disconcerting.
It does dissapear after you remove the cursor from the field, but this should not happen.

Sorry about that. Glad that you got it figured out.

Sounds like the character oriented auto fill is causing both of the problems that you mentioned.

I'll watch the less than and greater than and also attach the message as a test file to be sure to have it accurately presented.
