Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to draw the USER name?

    I am designing a multi-user application.
    So I have a field 'created_by', and another for 'modified_by'.
    My problem is how to 'auto-draw' these USER's name ( or PC's name ) into these fields?

    Grateful if anyone can help. Thanks.

      RE: How to draw the USER name?

      Hello Aaron,

      What I mean is: Can a value can be 'drawn'(taken) from the system? in the same manner as Date() will draw the system date into a Date_entered field.

      Thanks for the prompt response!

        RE: How to draw the USER name?

        Chris,
        not sure if I have understood you correctly. Anyway whatI do is declare user & group variables usually on Autuexec script, then, on a forms OnActivate event I put the following code:-
        user = user_name()
        group = user_groups()
        I then place these variables on the form.
        Hope this helps

        David

            To get the current user name:

            DIM cUserName AS C
            cUserName = user_name()

            FYI, "draw" to a programmer means to physically draw something on the screen, such as a bitmap. What you are referring to is assignment. You are assigning a value to a variable.

              Thank you so much Edward.

              Looks like I will need to spend some time to work this out.
              Will let know the outcome.

                RE: How to draw the USER name?

                It's possible everyone's looking at this as something difficult, where it may be something simple:

                Assume you have a variable with the user name already in place called vCUserName, and a field in your table called Created_By

                All you need to do is set a field rule for Created_By, with this expression:

                if (isblank("Created_By"), var->vCUserName, Created_By)

                Hope this helps

                  I agree with Steve, all you need is a couple of field rules to capture who created the record and who last modified it. We use this method all the time.

                    Thank you Steve. I think your suggestion ( 2nd step: using the field rules ) is very useful in this situation. However, I am interested to know how to ( do the 1st step ) have the variable with the user name already in place called vCUserName.

                      Chris

                      There are at least 2 ways, depending on what user name you want. If you are using the Alpha security options and want that user name, you would use

                      vCUserName = user_name()

                      If you want the user name form the Windows signon, use

                      vCUserName = api_getusername()

                      Now, where to put the code. If you want this to be available in field rules, open the table structure for the table where this will be used and go up to "table" on the menu and select "global calculated fields". In the name, place "vCUserName" or what ever name you want to use. In the expression, place "user_name()" or "api_getusername()" depending on what value you want. Save the change and now you can reference the variable in field rules.

                      You could also define the variable in an OnInit event for the first form that opens or an autoexec script. But, if you are going to use it in field rules, it is best to define it in the structure and it will always be available.

                        Hello Jerry,

                        Thank you so much for your elaborate and clear explanation.
                        api_getusername() is the expression that I was looking for. And I plan to use the Windows signon user names.

                        For the Created_By field, I set the Field Rule; User Entered, Simple Default Expression, Default Value as: API_GETUSERNAME()

                        For the Modified_By field, I set the Field Rule; Calculated, Calculated Field Expression: API_GETUSERNAME()

                        Thanks to all of you who have responded to this thread.
                        You are wonderful people! I am so glad to join this A5 club.
