Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error Messages

I had to reload my Alpha5 developer's software recently after a disk crash and since then have been getting error messages when I access various forms. These messages do not prevent me from accessing the data, but they are an annoyance in that I have to click on "OK" with each occurance. They are...

    "not an executable file"

"record number is past end of table"

    Any thoughts?

    RE: Error Messages

"not an executable file" - will occur if all lines of a script are 'commented out

"record number is past end of table" - will occur if Alpha thinks there are no records in a table being opened and fetched in a script

Might try database compact to make sure things are as normal as possible after the crash
    There can be only one.

Both of these error messages can also occur if a function call fails. Be sure you have updated to the latest build. Your code may be using functions from later builds than the one you reloaded.

        Jerry:

        Thanks.

Do you think it is possible that when I reloaded A5v5 on my PC and then loaded the latest patches (build 1491-1048)without bothering to load earlier patches, that this could be my problem?

          RE: Error Messages

Patches are not cumulative. All prior ptches are incorporated into the latest.

I believe the latest is now 1490.

            RE: Error Messages

Somehow I missed the part about the disk crash. It is possible that your database files were damaged in the crash. If you restored from backup, you would want to consider when the backup was made and if another backup shows the same effect. If the backup was made quite a while before the disk failure, it may have some old code issues. If the backup was made just before the failure, the failure may have already been in progress and the files may be damaged. If you have a different backup copy, try that.

The fact that you are using the latest build should have no effect. The probelm is most likely in the database somewhere. Troubleshooting the problem starts will recreating the actions that give the error. This should narrow the problem down to a single table or set, or a single form, or a script. Then you may have to step through each action or piece of code to track it down.

Also, how was the database transferred to the new disk? if any files are read only, which would happen if a CD was used, you may not be able to open all tables. Also, are all of the database and table files in the same directory? If they were spread over different folders on the old computer, som paths may be hard coded. If the path on the new computer is even slightly different than a hard coded path, some actions will fail. If all files wer / are in one directory and there are no hard coded paths, that shouldn't be an issue.

Another issue could occur with the operating system. If you are uisng Win2000 or WinXP, verify that you have the same user rights on the new installation.

              Thanks for your e-mail.

We run on a 10-user Windows 2000 server and my desktop copy is the developers version...everyone else runs runtime. So after I restored my version of A5v5 I simply loaded the database to the shadow directory and then did a refresh from the server. As a result I have the current version of my program.

I plan on looking at each screen this weekend to see if some of the new action script commands might be affecting this.

              Thanks again.
