Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Menu bar disappeared

The very top menu (the one that begins with File) has disappeared over the weekend. It was there when I shut down on Friday, and is not there this morning.

What can I do to get it back? I've closed/reopened, right clicked for anything else to try - but am stuck. Help!

    Thanks :)

    RE: Menu bar disappeared

hmmm...once I got into restructuring a table, and after an error message saying the table was being used by someone else (which it wasn't), and I closed it, the main menu suddenly appeared...

    Anyone else experience this?

      RE: Menu bar disappeared

      I spoke too soon.

My main menu bar keeps disappearing and reappreaing - no matter what table or, layout I am in.

To get it back, I go into design from view on a form, or print preview a report, or restructure a table. Sometimes doing one of these things makes the menu bar reappear, and sometimes doing all three of these things DOESN'T make it reappear.

It is making me very nervous...is this a bug from the last patch?

Also very, very odd...one of my tables had been copied onto the Runtime application and removed from the original location. Why? None of the other files did this.

      Totally stumped,
      Wanda

        Hi! :)

This may not be very encouraging, but here is what happened to me. It sounds similar to your experience:

The toolbar just below the menubar that you mention (the one with the design mode button) disappeared on me. Nothing I tried seemed to bring it back. Worse, I saw no logic to why it was gone in the first place. I learned to live with it for a while: if I just press this button, then Cancel, then leave the form, then return, I get my toolbar back! :) :(

I even tried to use xbasic to force it to appear. The thing that finally fixed it was a fluke, I thought at first. It just kills me. OnInit event had an actionscript defined. All it did was "Enter New Record." At some point, I decided that I did not need to Enter a New Record OnInit, so I deleted the action. My toolbar returned. I put the action back in; the toolbar disappeared. I removed the action again and the toolbar has not disappeared since then. What in the world does entering a new record have to do with whether my toolbar displays!?

I have learned that A5 is very flakey in many, many areas. I have also learned from programming in A5, that to cure a common cold, sometimes you just have to rub some fresh goat dung in your eyeball, hop on your left leg three times, and chant, "wo shi sha," until your face turns either Green White or Grey-50!

Other than that, it seems to be a very nice program. :>

I am not trying to slam anyone. Although my frustrations are genuine, I am trying to express it in a humorous, light-hearted fashion. Hopefully, I succeeded! :)

Yes, Kenneth - your humor came through, as well as your frustration - and I appreciate BOTH! It sure seems "flaky" sometimes...take a peek at my last thread about a field rule calculation wiping out all other field rules in the table?! It happens even after renaming the table (which is in a set), and after packing, after rebuilding indexes, etc...the odd thing is that it used to work just fine. I thought a worm was involved, but now I think it is because I checked the box in the settings to accept 4 digit dates and convert to 6 digit dates. I still can't get the darned calc to stop wiping out all the other field rules!!!

I will take a peek at my ONINT events - even though between the time when my menu was always there, and the time that it disappeared, I did not do any designing!

Wish me luck, Ken...I certainly don't want to have to succumb to goat dung!

Thanks for the info and sympathy :)))

              RE: Menu bar disappeared

Flakey behavour is not normal or typical. Many problems are caused by corrupted data dictionaries, memory problems, or coding errors. Frequently the program gets blamed because that is the easy answer when nothing seems obvious. Not to say the program doesn't have bugs. There is not such thing as a bug free program. However, before the program gets blamed, a more in depth analysis must be done.

A search of the message board may be helpful. For instance, loss of menus and toolbars has been discussed many times. If you search for "lost menu bar" (no quotes) you will get 26 hits and a number of solutions.

The next step in troubleshooting should always be to do routine maintenance. Reboot the computer and compact the database. Then recheck. If the problem is specific to one table or set, open the default form and see if the problem exists there. If that fails, open a database that is known to work, like Alpha Sports. If this does not work correctly, then there is a problem that effects the Alpha program.

If Alpha Sports works normally, then the problem is specific to your database. One of the issues that comes up in this program it that it will sometimes let you do things you shouldn't do. It isn't until the program starts acting strangely that you learn there is a problem. It would be impossible to trap every possible misuse and this occationally creates trouble.

If you become stumped, posting a detailed explanation can be helpful. Sometimes the best solution is to post an example with dummy data that shows the problem. Normally, someone can track down the error with an example. If it truely is a program problem, a good example is needed to track it down and correct it.

                Hi Jerry,
Thank you for your in-depth reply. Here are the particulars:

                I've done the routine maintenance.

Problem is not specific to one table or set.

                I've rebooted several times.

I did not do any designing, data entry or ANY work in the database between the time it worked properly and when it decided not to work properly.

There is no menubar in Alpha Sports, either.

So, what now? Will Alpha send me a new program disk?

                Frustrated,
                Wanda

Di you search for "lost menu bar"? Selwyn recommended clearing the registry and restarting Alpha. This seems to have worked for everyone who has had the problem.

                    Copy down your license number
                    go into the registry
delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Five Version 5 registry tree.
                    Restart alpha five

I would love to try this but how do I "go into the registry"? Also, will the HKEY_CURRENT_USER...registry tree be obvious?

                      Thank you :)

Okay - found Selwyn's 6/19/03 message which also says to find the HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\..., and how to find it.

My system doesn't have this file, apparently...
