Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Math Function: Normal Distribution

There is a function in Microsoft Excel NORMSDIST() called Normal Cumulative Ditribution. Is there a correspondng function in Alpha5v5? I have looked everywhere but can't seem to match one up. Any info. will be greatly appreciated.

    Kris,

Just as a matter of interest, what are you trying to calculate that need Standard Deviation?

Have you looked in the Expression Functions Reference manual? Do a search for Deviation.

      Keith,

It a long story really. Trying to incorporate an Excel spreadsheet into an application. Excel has this function NORMSDIST() and Alpha5 doesn't have a corresponding function. I did find the formula. Its very long and convoluted and is not perfect. Desparately need this corresponding function. It is for a Hedge Fund...

It wouldn't be very hard to do that in Xbasic. There are algorithms on the 'net, so it'd just be a matter of translating one of those in to Xbasic. (I thought I had seen some math/statistics-oriented people here, maybe one will chime in.)

The downloaded X-Basic Reference lists functions STDDEV, POP_STDDEV and RUN_STDDEV. Would one of these do the job.

            Kris,

Your other choice is to build your own Function.

              Keith,

I am trying to build my own function but am just not able to find the exact formula for it. Found a couple, but they don't work. The answers are not the same when I put it in Alpha5 vs Excel NORMSDIST() function. Close but not the same and when the #s are higher than 1, then there are big differences.

Guess the answer is to first get the correct formula which seems to be impossible to find. Searched the net for 2 days.

I was also thinking of a seamless way to export certain Variables to an excel spreadsheet, have it calculate the NORMSDIST() there and then bring it back to my app in Alpha5. Has anyone done this seamlessly... i.e. at the push of one button?

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

              Thx
              Kris

I don't think there is a single analytic function--I think it requires a Taylor series to approximate it. I haven't been able to find the exact function either.

                  RE: Math Function: Normal Distribution

i found an approximation in c which i adapted to alpha five. it gives me the same results as you get in Excel. Just copy and paste it into your editor:

                      Wayne,

It works perfectly. Thanks again. You have no idea how much time you saved me. Never thought I would find an answer for that here. Anyway... I have another problem... probably smaller. In the financial world, there is something called DAYS360(StartDate,EndDate). It basically means that the function calculates the # of days based on a 360 days calender year. So, the answer is always... 30,60,90,120.... for # of days. I know I can figure it out a lot easier than the NORMSDIST, but wondered if you came accross this function before.

Again, any help will be greatly appreciated.
