Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Browse - Check Box - grr

    A5V5 Latest Build

I have a form based on a set (one to one), the only thing on the Form is an embedded Browse which shows fields from the parent table and the child. One of the fields (from the parent) is a logical field for which I have selected the check box option. The idea is that my browsed data is selected first by a filter, and then I can also check/uncheck any individual record to fine tune the records in the set that I will then do some further processing on. The check box in a browse just does not seem to work - sometimes it will change (check/uncheck) and sometime not - there does not seem to be any way to simply check or uncheck a box. I have tried every way I can think of in terms of highlighting the record, right click change record, F3 allow edits etc and then check or uncheck a box - no joy. It tends to do things like black out the column, check the box above the one you are on - but a clean check/uncheck it will not! Has anyone tried something similar - any secrets to making it work?

The same behavior also experienced on an embedded browse on a single table.

    Regards,
    Scott

    Scott,

I just tried to duplicate your problem but can't. I placed a logical field in the embedded browse as a checkbox and I was able to check and un-check without any trouble.

Could you post a sample so we can check that?

I know browses are currently a problem so I don't doubt what your seeing .. might be something your doing I am not.

      Hi Scott

Thanks for having a look. In setting up a quick and nasty example, I have just found that the issue only occurs if the form is set to modal. If you set yours to modal do you get the problems? My example (modal) is attached.

        Scott,

I set my form to modal and still had no problem ...

The file you attached was just the .adb .. you need to zip the test database to include all the files not just the .adb

            Scott,

Yup I see whats going on ... very strange .. It appears that the checkbox does not react to the modal state of the form so when you click it the record goes into change mode but doesn't save when you change rows(records) This is confirmed by watching the record number in the toolbar.

If you use the arrow keys or click on the row selector then hit F3 then click the checkbox then hit F9 all works fine, but one click on the check box without hitting F3 puts Alpha in this unknown state. Watch the icons on the tool bar. They all light up. No way to recover from this state unless you exit the form and reenter .. but don't click that checkbox or it starts all over again.

If the field is not a checkbox all works as expected. So my guess is there is a conflict going on within Alpha's code. The check box needs to be modal along with the rest of the form or coded to put the form into change mode.

The only workaround I found was I put 'topparent.commit()' in the 'CanRowChange'

k - thanks Scott - glad it is not just me. I will pass the issue on to Selwyn and check out the workaround. Modelss might even be the way to go.
