Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Urgent help needed

    Hi all

Rapidly approaching a print deadline (in 24 hours time) and A5 has fallen over on me.

When trying to load A5 I get a popup window with a message:

"Error running addin 'startup_alpha_five' :Error 1"

I am using build 1490_1047 and I have already tried reinstalling the previous patch to no avail.

    Any help gratefully received

    Regards

And I have done a search and seen the other threads! I have managed to access the database via my runtime version so I can carry on my work but need to get this sorted.

If the cold boot doesn't work you could reinstall A5. It won't affect your application.

            Glen,

If you're unable to start Alpha Five from the Start / Programs list, I suggest:

            1) update and run your virus checker
            2) scan disk to look for and fix lost clusters
            3) reboot
            4) reinstall Alpha Five, then the patches

If you simply unable to start a single database a different set of steps would be indicated.

              Tom

              Thanks for the advice but

              1) update and run your virus checker - I keep updated but did a full sweep and nothing founf
              2) scan disk to look for and fix lost clusters - all clear
              3) reboot -yep, still no change
              4) reinstall Alpha Five, then the patches - did that and still no change.

The weird thing was I was working in an application, I exited that app and realised I had forgotten to do something so went back in to the app and that is when the problem started.

The next thing I did was to fire up A5 directly and same problem. Then fired up A5 runtime and opened the app no problems. Deduction.... problem with A5? aaaaaggggghhh

Something else to try: After uninstalling Alpha Five use Regedit to delete the Alpha Five Registry Key. Peter Wayne describes this in a previous message - do a search. Shut your machine down, turn back on and then reinstall Alpha.

did you try opening alphasports wtih A5 full version
                  if that starts correctly

when you click on the shortcut that starts your application, hold down ctrl-shift - which will give you the option to open the app without processing autoexec, opening the main form, etc. - so you can debug the problem

if that doesn't do it - contact Alpha

                    RE: Urgent help needed

                    Hi Guys,

I would like to redefine a cold boot. All too often most users feel as though they have cold rebooted because they chose "shut down" as opposed to "restart". Doing this is close but not totally acceptable. I have always urged everyone to be sure that power is off for at least 20 seconds, for my machine, I use 25 seconds since I timed a full shutdown to be 21 seconds.

To time your appropriate off time you need to turn your sound up as loud as you can stand it then shut your machine off and listen to the crackling or any other noises coming from the speakers. This noise, if any, proves that the polarized capacitors in the power supply and on the motherboard are still holding a charge.
If a charge exists on the caps, it is likely that RAM and cache are still holding snippets of code.

Apparently many MB designers do not automatically dump the RAM and cache when a reboot is chosen.

                      wooo hooo

Firstly I tried to do a repair selecting the option to overwrite all the newer files with the older ones. That worked! as I was able to load A5 and app BUT as soon as I applied ANY patch the problem returned.

Then uninstalled, deleted the whole Alpha Software registry entry, reinstalled and all is working again.

                      Phew

                      Thanks guys

A standard step in uninstalling Alpha and re-installing should be deleting the Alpha Five registry key. I've seen it fix a number of unexplainable situations.
