Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Query Problem

I have created a database listing the volumes in my library (author, title, pub date, edition, etc). When I try to do a multiple sort I get the following message:

Script: UI_DLG_BOX: Custom Sort: line 30
    Get_base_filter (vl)
    Volume: tables; title not found

Obviously I've done something wrong but have no idea what. Any help will be greatly appreciated - Thanks - Jack

    RE: Query Problem

    Jack,

Perhaps if you show us the details of how you're doing the query... especially the specific filter expression, maybe we can help. Details on the table or set structure relevant to the query is necessary, too. Plus, context information... i.e. where the query is running.

By the time you get it documented to the point where we can understand what you're doing, you might think it would have been easier to just upload a working model of the database, and most of us would agree. Why not attach a working model and show us where to look for the problem ?

      RE: Query Problem

Thank you very much for your response Tom. I would be happy to upload my database, if that is what you meant. I have never done that before and am not sure how to do it.

        Jack,

Click the Reply button to reply to a message in this thread. Click the link 'what files must I send?' (It's adjacent to the 'attach file' option you will use to post the database here) Follow the instructions.

          RE: Query Problem

Hi, Tom: Thank you for your time and interest in my problem. I appreciate it. First off, I downloaded WinZip and as I went through the process to zip the necessary files I noticed something that might be causing my problem. I created a database l called "literature" containing biographical data. I then created the "volume" database that was giving me the problem. However, the volume databasae was located in the "literature" folder and there were no >dbf files associated with the volume database. And the field "title" is not in the "literature" database, only in the volume database. And since the query indicated that it could not find "title", I aussume it was looking in the "literature" database although I'm not sure why. Does this mean anything to you and could it be the source of my problem?

            RE: Query Problem

            Jack,

In its effort to be helpful, Alpha Five will permit you to add tables to a database that are located in any number of folders on your machine. This almost NEVER a good thing. The recommended approach is to put the tables in the folder where the database is created, and then 'add' them to the database from there.

To see 'which' tables your database is using change the View on the Tables / Sets tab of the control panel to 'details'. (Right click open space on the Tables / Sets tab, choose view, then details.)

Hi, Tom: OK here's what I have after following your suggest:

When I open up my "volume" form this is the diagram:

              A5/literature/title/volume(form)

When I open up my "biodata" form this is the diagram:

              A5/literature/bio/biodata(form)

Is this not the way it should work?

Hi, tom: The tables are title and bio. I was trying to show where they were located. Perhaps I missed what you were trying to tell me. If so, I apologize.

I'm wondering if I should not have put the "title" table under "literature"
