Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    database maintenance

What's the best way to have database maintenance (pack, compact, backup) performed by end user whose only experience with application comes from menus?

Documentation suggests that all forms, etc have to be closed for compacting?

    Thanks.

    RE: database maintenance

By using Action Scripting you can have buttons on a form that will perform these functions.

      RE: database maintenance

Most users have a menu form based on a table with one field and one record. This is a great place to put the buttons, as this table doesn't need compacted or reindexed.

        RE: database maintenance

Appreciate the suggestions. Made buttons for backup and pack. Backup button works well on form in original table or new table.

When I use pack button on new table form it works well.

When I use pack button on original form OR when I specify new form from old form, pack button does not work. Script error. I've tried scripting closing windows, etc. but I'm not smart enough to figure this out.

        Suggestions? Thanks.

          James,
Have looked at every entry in the action scripting and cannot find one there for compacting. Are the eyes failing, or could you tell me where exactly the compact data base script is for a button on a form.
          Thank you.

I believe you are correct. I also cannot find any Action Scripting for "compact". Maybe someone has written code for this that could be attached to a button.

                RE: database maintenance

That is just what we were looking for. I attached the script to the invoice menu in Alphasports database. When running the script a message appeared asking if the invoice menu table should be eliminated. So, charging ahead with full speed I clicked on "yes". Now, the invoice menu table is gone from the control panel as well as the invoice menu form that was attached to that table.
Strange, however, when running the Alphasports application the program works as it should, that is the invoice menu appears as usual. However, the invoice menu table does not appear in the Control Panel and the attached form does not appear. The script did run as anticipated.
It would appear my mistake was in saying yes to the above question. Now how do I correct the error?

                  Got a backup?

Restore the menu table and it's associated data dictionary files: "Menu_table>.ddd, "Menu_table>.ddm, and "Menu_table>.ddx

Did not have a backup of the AlphSports application, so I just downloaded a new copy from the Alpha Web Page.

I usually have backups of my sensitive files.

                      RE: database maintenance

Looking at the script that is generated when "compact database" is selected from the file menu, it appears that the script packs the tables and updates the indexes. Is this different than selectivly choosing the pack command and then the update indexes command.

                          Sidney,
I'm wondering if you have the same thing as I do.
If File -> Database Compact is used, the db compacts without a hitch.
With a button on a form, and :A5.Compact(), the compact - even if done immediately after the aforementioned method - brings up a number of "suggestions" about getting rid of tables.
                          Any explanations?
