Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a challenge

The situation is rolodex cards. The front of the card has the usual stuff student name, address, emergency contact info. We would like to have the reverse side of the card show the student schedule and it has to print UPSIDE DOWN because the card is flipped on the rolodex. Now this easy to do using the MOD function when you are printing all of the records. Unfortunately because of graduates and withdrawals the records are not all printed and they have to be printed in reverse order on the page. The front of the page would have (for example)these record numbers

    1 3
    4 7
    8 11
    18 19

Then we put the page back in the printer upside down and print the reverse side
    18 19
    8 11
    4 7
    1 3

It would be possible to create a temporary table that would have consecutive numbers to simplify things but I'm not sure I'm smart enough to figure our the formula to put the right record in the right place.

    Thanks for the help

    Jim

    RE: a challenge

    Jim,

    Wouldn't the series be:
    Code:
    1 3
    4 7
    8 11
    18 19
    ____
    Then

    19 18
    11 8
    7 4
    3 1
    ____
    ???

      Tom,

No, actually, Jim had it right. Think about it a bit more.

      Jim,

If you invert the sort order or set order to descending instead of ascending, you almost have it right, but need to reverse the left and right columns. I haven't investigated whether a5 labels can fill in this manner, but I'd doubt it. Never-the-less, it could be done probably most easily by copying the records to a temporary table, then sorting the records to have the correct order using a MOD function and the RECNO() to order them the correct way for the inverted printing.

Ira, thanks, I should know better than to offer opinions on such things... you should see the mess I make trying to duplex copying on a non-duplex copy machine!

I learned a l-o-n-g time ago that you MUST make a sample copy when you duplex especially when you print something in booklet format.
          Thanks for looking at this.

          Ira
I thought your idea would work, I was hoping to avoid making a temporary table because I'm using a set and have to copy both tables and extablish the links etc.

          Thanks for your reply

Now look for my next post.

            RE: a challenge

            Jim,

You don't have to copy the set's tables. Just do a copy of the relevant fields (parent or child) from the set to a temporary table that you leave the data dictionary alone during the copy. The table should have a mail label layout or similar, that was created by having an empty template table that you duplicate for the purpose of copyinmg to it.
