Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    server question

I just took a new position as assistant principal at small private school. It appears that I will end up being the network administrator because, even though I don't know much, I know I don't know much.
As I understand things, the purpose of the server is to hold data and make it available to the people on the network. The programs themselves (Word, Excell etc.) would reside on the individual machines and the data (documents and spreadsheets) would reside on the server.
If I wrote an application for A5, I would put the runtime and the application on the individual machines and the data on the server, or do I put the application and the data on the server?
I know this is really basic but the setup that I am looking at is a real mess and I can't trust the people who set it up originally because the network has not worked well since January. (I'm beginning to suspect the Apple Airport)
FYI the server is a Dell 2400 running Win 2K server edition there is a domain for the lab of 20 computers running win 2k and then various computers running anything from win 95 to win XP. The server has a typing program that I suppose has some kind of grading/reporting system and a few games.
Our license situation seems ok, I just want to make sure that I am going in the right direction.

    Thanks
    Jim

    RE: server question

James, your first assertion is the correct one.

"If I wrote an application for A5, I would put the runtime and the application on the individual machines and the data on the server"

Be sure to review the info on creating shadow DBs and network optimize.

If you have had concerns regarding the variety of diseperate configurations on your network you can deploy only to newer machines to start. This will let you verify your application on a portion of the network and may help identify problem areas if you roll out the app to the other machines in groups.

      RE: server question

      Hi James,

You'll install the runtime version of A5 on each user's machine. Application and data will go on the server. You then "shadow" the database on each user's machine. This is all explained in the Runtime docs, and is very easy to set up.

I was afraid I would have to hire someone to figure it all out for me when I decided to network my office. I decided to try it myself first, and was amazed at how easy it was to set A5 up on the network. If I can do it, anyone can!

      Good luck,
      Charlain

        RE: server question

You might find it easier to do all the develpment work on one machine, on the network or not. When the app is where you want it you can copy it to the network. Then all the users will have to have their machines network optimized. This downloads basically everything but the data to each machine to speed up the network. Otherwise the app would be really slow. Each time you make changes to the app on the server, the client machines will have to be updated. Since this is time consuming you probably won't want to network optimize for each change but only do it when you have made enough changes to make the time worth it. Of course if you make changes to fix major errors, then you will want to optimize more often.

          Thank you for your replies.
I plan on having only five or six people being able to access the program (and data) Obviously I don't weant kids getting at the information and I can't trust all of the teachers.

          Thanks again
