Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Excel Browse Pastes

This is the case of the disappearing paste...

Build 1466/1044. A client wishes to copy & paste some data from an Excel worksheet cell to a field in an embedded browse. After he does so the text disappears when the field looses focus. When the field has focus, the text reappears. If he types in the text, the text remains regardless of focus.

I tested this using Arial 8 both as the A5 field font and Excel cell and was able to duplicate the behavior. I also tried pastes to non-embedded browse fields (e.g., header fields) and the text does NOT disappear. Pastes from one A5 field to another in an embedded browse work fine. Pasting from notepad or word works okay too. Just Excel, so far. And in Excel, I tried several other fonts including courier -- pastes all disappear when the field looses focus.

Anybody know what's happening here and a possible workaround? Pasting selected Excel data apparently saves this guy a lot of time!

    John,

I have seen this behavior or similar before. But can't seem to repeat it now (using latest build posted yesterday).

Could it be simply a resources issue?

I tried a couple of different applications and forms with embedded browses, but couldn't repeat the problem.

      Hi Vince -

Thanks for checking this out. This is wierd. I just made a new set and used the default form. No formatting whatsoever. Pasted text disappears right on cue. I'm using Excel 2000 & so is my client. The operating system doesn't appear to matter...he has 98SE & I'm running 2000. I'll track down a different version of Excel to see if that behaves differently.

Guess there is a possibility the new build might be a factor too. I wasn't going to install it until the apparent issues are understood, but I'll give that a try also.

Excel version does not appear to matter. What does appear to matter is the copy method in Excel.

If I click the copy button in Excel, I get the disappearing text behavior in A5.

If I highlight the cell & use Ctrl-C, the text will stick.

Is this the way you were copying?

I was right-clicking inside the cell, and selecting copy.
Then right-clicking inside the A5 field and selecting paste.

Right-click copying did NOT do the trick for me. Neither did installing the newest build. I'm getting this behavior on two desktops and a laptop.

            Can anyone verify behavior?

              John

I am getting the same results as Vince, even selecting multiple cells in Excel and trying to paste. Try creating a single table with only a few fields and see if you can post. Are you trying to post to a child record in the set by any chance? If you are, does any child record exist or is the paste making a new one?

                RE: Excel Browse Pastes

A lot has to do with the length of the Excel field. The data is still there it is just that the cursor is at the end of the pasted data pushing all the data to the left.

Try hitting the backspace. Be careful as to not erase all of the data. That should give you some idea as to what is going on. That is one reason why you can highlight just the typed data, copy and the paste and it works.

For a solution there are a couple of things to do. Try shrinking the column width in Excel, or Try increasing the field size an A5.

                Hope this helps,

                  Hi Jerry -

Thanks. Sorry if I've been unclear.

A single table is no problem, as is pasting into a character field of the parent record in a set. It's a paste into an embedded browse [child] field that's the problem. I get the same results whether the child record is in enter or change mode. I guess I should say that I'm not trying to paste into a linked field or a field that is part of an index. And I should say again that the text displays correctly anytime you give the field focus after pasting. Text will not display at all in the pasted field without the field having focus.

The only way I can get the paste to display with or without focus is to highlight the Excel cell & copy with keystoke Ctrl-C -- sorta clunky for a novice user.

                    Hi Dan -

Thanks. I thought about the possibility of copying an abundance of spaces from the Excel cell and I tried testing for this. What it looks like is that only one space comes with the paste. I even tried TRIMing the Excel field. I couldn't get adjusting the cell or field lengths to affect the behavior.

Making any edit in the pasted field corrects the problem, including removal of the extra trailing space.

So, what will work is to highlight the Excel cell text, use any copy method, use any paste method. Although the highlighting seems to me to be an unnecessary step, it's a procedure that will work.
