Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Approach to Alpha -calculated fields

I am moving a file over from Approach... I know calculated fields don't translate over...

    1. how do I fix a field so it has a fixed amount i.e. hourly rate

    2. how do I fix the field that needs to be a calculated field... ie. hourly rate x number hours??

    thanks

RE: Approach to Alpha -calculated fields

I would suggest reading the "getting started" file regarding field rules, or you could hire a consultant

RE: Approach to Alpha -calculated fields

Diane, spend time defining field rules for the table. This is explained in the User Guide.

      1) a default value field rule might be exactly the ticket

      2) a field rule that defines a computed value for the field, based on values input by the user in other fields in the table, might be just what you need. In Alpha Five these are called Calculated Fields, in the Field Rule editor.

RE: Approach to Alpha -calculated fields

I appreciate everyone's suggestions.. generally I understand how to set up the calculated fields..and have been trying all kinds of things.. including searching in the users guide... just haven't accomplished my objectives yet...

I try to make a calculated field stating...
          ie. totalhours*hourly rate
but I keep getting anotice that the expression isn't done correctly...

I did learn that when when I'm in tables and right click that I have some options to work with!! So I'm trying to define some of the fields right now from here.. (still have work to do!!)

This database definitely requires more work then approach!!

RE: Approach to Alpha -calculated fields

            Diane,

Are you using the "Expression Builder?" (it pops up when you click the x.y symbol at the end of the Calculated Field Expression box when you're defining your calculated field.) It makes building the expressions much easier.

What expression are you using that's giving you the notice it's not done correctly?

If you're using something like field_name1 * field_name2 for your expression are both fields set up as numeric? Both have to be defined as Numeric Fields (or converted to numeric fields) before you can multiply them.

            Hope this helps,
            Charlain

              Charlain,
OK... I think I know what some of my problem was...
the database I'm working with was transferred over from approach... my fields were not identified as numeric...
so I got my calculated field to work...

now.. I have a different question... when I right click on my table.. I use edit structure and edit field rules...
I set my fields (decimals, calculated field , etc).... should this info carry over to other view (i.e. in a form??)
It seems I get this stuff worked out in one view... but then have to work thru it when I work on designing the form.
              thanks

I disagree and I've used both. They are different and you need to learn some new techniques but, once you do, I think you will find A5 just as easy to use but FAR more powerful.
