Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error occurred parsing...

I am trying to print labels based on a set. The set is Management Companies 1:N Properties.

The majority of the info for the label comes directly from the Management Company table. But, I want to print out a count of the number of properties each management company owns on their label.

The count expression I am using is:

count(Complex_Info->Propertyname,GRP->MANAGEMENT_COMPANIES, GRP->COMPLEX_INFO) and in the Expression Builder it evaluates correctly.

When I try to print, I get the error message "error occurred parsing CALC -- bad parameter summarize over group GRP->MANAGEMENT_COMPANIES...."

Obviously, A5 doesn't like something I've done. I need some help getting this to work.

    Thanks,
    Charlain

Oops -- that set should read:

    Management_Companies 1:N Complex_Info

Complex_Info is the proper name for my "properties" table :)

      From the documentation for count():

Note: This function is a report writer function, not intended for table level field rules or other expressions. While the function may perform in some areas outside of the report writer, its use there is not supported.

There are no "legal" groups in the label designer.

Try creating a tablecount() or dbcount() expression.
      There can be only one.

        Stan,

Thanks for the info! I'll look into the other functions you mentioned.

          Stan,

By documentation, were you referring to the Expressions Reference Manual? I don't see the note you quoted in my copy of this manual.

I looked up the tablecount and dbcount functions, but I didn't see any way to get them to do what I need. I'll go experiment a while and see if I can figure it out. In the meantime, if you have any more suggestions, I'd appreciate the help.

I believe the expressions ref manual has been superceeded by the xbasic reference manual downloadable from the Learning Center. Latest release - 7-18-03.

The examples in the manuals are sometimes non-illustrative of real-live usage needs.

              If you understand

              tablecount("PURCHASE.DBF", "MANAGER = 'ANDRY'")

              consider

              tablecount("PURCHASE.DBF", "MANAGER = " + manager)

which would be reevaluated, say for labels being printed, each time the manager field changed.

              Think of it as

"(manager field) = " +current value in manager field

so it counts all records in the purchase.dbf whose value in manager field equals the value in the manager field of the current record.

Now just drop in your appropriate table and field names.

                    Hi Stan,

After reading the info you gave me, I was sure it would be the solution. But, I haven't got it working right yet. Here's what I now have in the Calculated Expression on my label:

                    tablecount("complex_info.dbf","Management_Co= " + 'Management_Co')

I tried entering the expression without the single ' around + 'Management_Co' like you had in your example, but the expression builder kept saying it was an invalid expression until I put the ' around it.

I no longer get the "error occurred parsing.." message, but instead of displaying the number of properties for each Management Company, it is displaying the total number of Management Companies in the entire complex_info table on every label.

I haven't had much time to work with this tonite, so as hurried as I've been and as sleepy as I am, I'm sure I'm just overlooking something. I plan to start again on it in the morning. If you spot what I've done wrong, please clue me in :)

Thank you so much for all your help.

I think it was my error on the filter in the expression
                      (they are tricky)

                      try

                      tablecount("complex_info.dbf","Management_Co= '"+Management_Co+"'")

Cut and paste from the above post. It is hard to read that there are single and double quotes involved.

                          Hi Stan,

I cut & pasted the code, but the Expression Builder doesn't like it. It says its invalid or incomplete.

I tried removing the extra + at the end of Management_Co, but that didn't fix it. I also tried adding the complex_info-> before the Management_Co field names, but it didn't like that either.

Will you take another look for me?

                          Thanks again,

                            Charlain,

here's an example I whipped up for you.

It uses dbcount() to count the number of linked child records, by counting the number of entries in the index list of the child table, based on the link field value in the set.

Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

Preview the only label design, then open it in design mode and study the calc field which produces the count.

                            -- tom

                              Stan,

I finally figured out a way to print the number of properties per Management Company on each Management Company's label.

I put a button with an action script on a form based on the set. I already had a calculated field on the form that counted the number of properties for each management company. So, the action script just grabbed that number into a variable and put the number in a non-calculated field that I added to the table structure. Since there were less than 300 Management Companies in the database, it only took 5 minutes for me to open each form and hit the button to transfer the number. Then I added the field with the transferred number to the label itself.

Not an elegant solution, but it worked. I'd still like to know how to get this to work "on-the-fly" when printing the labels. So, one day when you have nothing better to do -- if you figure it out, let me know.

Thanks so much for all your help!!
