Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Concurrent Users

    Hello

Has anyone any experience of the performance under a load of 28 concurrent users as follows -

    23 on LAN (100baseT)
5 on ADSL through Terminal server (this will increase to 12)

    RE: Concurrent Users

    Ian,

There are many variables besides concurrent users to consider. We are running a system with over 150 concurrent users. Our connections are 10 or 100 baseT and we have a number of Citrix connected remote sites. Our response times are fairly good and users don't really get in each other's way. We have spent a lot of time tweaking our network and servers. Since your server is a critical piece in the system, you must be sure that it is running at its best. Application design can make or break a networked application. If you are passing huge amounts of data around, and locking numerous records each time a user does an update, that will severely impact your system.

A well designed application on a clean network should be able to handle your user requirements without blinking. Alpha's software is certainly up to the challenge.

      RE: Concurrent Users

      Hello Tom

Thanks for your opinions. We do 'hammer' our present system as we are a distributor of schoolwear ,so the sales team of 10 staff process about 200 orders a day ranging from 1 to 800 items per order. We also have 6 staff who operate the purchasing deptartment which we operate as a CMT manufacturer, from Europe, Soth africa and Far East.

We can, and do find that 10+ users could be accessing the same stock item, through all the departments, (sales/buying/warehouse/customer enquiries).

We occasionally get a locking problem with multiply users accessing the picking tickets and despatch tables whilst these are being added to by the warehouse department.

Any suggestions would be helpful, as I am new to Alpha5 - got to say its much better than Ms Access.

With the level of users of your installation, are you using an external database with ALpha or do you find its database specifications are acceptable. I was looking at MySQL with a windows fron-end before I was introduced to Alpha5.

      king regards

        RE: Concurrent Users

        Ian:

without seeing the system I can only make generalized statements.

Access to any of the support tables should be quick and decisive. Open the table, get the record and or data, close the table. (over simplified).

Sales and Customer service should be accessing most tables with read_only capabilities. this would eliminate some of the locks. Warehouse should have exclusive access only to those records they are updating.

        I hope this helps.

          Thanks Bob

Knowing that you are using the system with upwards of 150 users gives me greater confidence in being able to develop an application for only 30 users.

            RE: Concurrent Users

            Ian,
We use Alpha's .dbf files. The old version (alpha5 ver1) didn't have an option to use anything else, and we are running just fine. With the newest release (ver6), you will have the option of using a "more robust" back end. With your configuration, I really don't see a need. Just be sure to set your access to optimize data entry so you can get the orders in. Customer Service only needs to "see" the information, not normally enter it.

            Good Luck,

            Tom

              RE: Concurrent Users

              Hello Tom

Can you advise the maximum database size in Alpha5v5. i cannot find this information anywhere. i am aware that it can handle a vast record range, from the threads in the forum 500k+ is ok, but my concern is the actual database size. The present system increasees by about 100k per month, and I would expect this to increase as we develop more functions of the system.

We need to have at least 5 years of data available. Therefore I estimate that we need a limit of 10Gb to be safe.

              Regards

              Ian
