Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import ASCII files

Are there limitations to using import for ascii files?
I am trying to import a file with record sizes of 2305 bytes, delimited by CR, containing around 130 or so fields. Using the import genie I specify Carriage Return as the record seperator and table format (fixed width fields). The next screen in which vertical seperators for fields appears sometimes works and sometimes does not. Sometimes one of the seperators contains a box instead of the diamond and will not allow changes to the following fields. I have opened up the design mode and made changes to field names, lengths and offsets but upon saving the xbasic remains unchanged. I have also created again from scratch but the xbasic only lists upto import.field25. I am using Home Edition Alpha 5 version 5.0 build 1466.
Also when the import operation is run and files not found, the import icon disappears when design is selected, only to return after I exit Alpha 5 and return. Help appreciated.

    RE: Import ASCII files

    Geoff,

Well, it sounds like just about anything that can go wrong, IS going wrong, doesn't it?

In my experience over 90% of the difficulties using the import genie stem from mismatches between the source data and the destination's table structure. Frequently it boils down to inconsistencies in the source data. Most problems are solved when these are fixed. If you haven't checked the source data you probably should.

For large data sets the process of checking is sometimes easy and sometimes virtually impossible. If you face the latter situation, you might try dividing the source file in half, running the import op against each separately. Each time you hit a snag, divide that portion of the source file in half again. Keep going until you find the troubled data.

If the data is not sensitive you could post it here, along with the import table you want to use.

      geoff:

The records may end with a crlf not just a cr. If you have an Hex editor you can verify. If not you can make some monor adjustments to get around the problem.

I am guessing that the little box you see causes a the data being imported to shift. If this is the case change the import length by one. Usually, I just increase or decrease the import record length by one or two positions.

      I hope this helps.
