Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Should Alpha Ship a Ver 5.5?

    Hello Ken:

OK, since you asked, I will expand upon my little theory. Let me state right up front that I have no specific knowledge, everything I say below is limited to my perspective while sitting at a computer in suburban Maryland.

I think waiting until ver 6 is ready to ship doesnt appear to be a viable option for the company. Why do I say that?

Ver 6 is a very complex undertaking and Im sure they still have a great deal of work to complete before theyll be ready to ship the product. Judging from past experience, were probably talking anywhere from 6-12 months, possibly longer since this will have to be a rock solid release if companies are going to use A5 as a front end to heavy duty back end databases

Although adding Client-Server functionality will be an incredible achievement that will hopefully open up a lucrative and entirely new market to Alpha Software, Client-Server functionality probably has very little to offer most current customers.

On the other hand, the Web Application Server [WAS] is relevant to the overwhelming majority of Alpha customers. In fact, I think its probably reached the point where integrating A5 with the web is a critical need for current Alpha users. Hence, the WAS is a product needed yesterday by the Alphas community, they cannot afford to wait much longer for that type of functionality. In my opinion, they certainly cannot wait another 6-12 months, or possibly even longer, until Ver 6 is rock solid before they ship the WAS.

In my judgment, except for the usual long list of genies that have spoiled us in ver 5, it appears as if the WAS is probably ready to ship. Im guessing Alpha Software can release a ver 5.5 update in the near future that includes the WAS and hopefully the new and vastly improved BROWSE model that Selwyn talked about at the Alpha Conference. Once this product is on the market, Im sure they can add new WAS Genies to version 5.5 incrementally via patches.

And lets not forget the revenue stream thats important to all companies, but especially Alpha Software. It could be a long time before ver 6 is ready to ship. However, coming up with an interim release, such as a ver 5.5, could produce a small, but steady stream of revenue, while Selwyn and his crack staff are working on the Client Server model.

    Just my opinion,
    Robert T

      Hi robert,

Thanks for your insight. I agree that:

      1. V6 is a ways off yet but I'm thinking 12-18 months, or more.
      2. "Hence, the WAS is a product needed yesterday" Absolutely, no doubt about it. How about last year? Close to release? Hmmmmmm

If your gut feeling is correct (I hope it is) Selwyn's had a change in strategy. Being flexible and changing ones mind as situations change is positive.

        Robert,

Your reasoning is sound. But it seems that Selwyn made it pretty clear that WAS is a separate product. I bet "integrating" it into ver. 5 would be another major effort.

RE: Should Alpha Ship a Ver 5.5?

          Hi Peter:

Its been about 3 months since the A5 Conference so I dont remember exactly what Selwyn said. I thought he said it was a given the WAS would NOT be included in ver 5.

However, I didnt get the impression there was a technical hurdle involved, I thought it was merely a business decision. Maybe Im wrong, but I would be very surprised to learn there is a technical reason why they cannot create a ver 5.5 that includes the WAS.

Peter, do you remember Selwyns comments reference the new Browse theyve developed?

I clearly remember Selwyn stating the current browse is a version 1 relic and they were designing a completely new one from the ground up. I cannot remember if Selwyn said theyve already rebuilt the new browse or if he said it was still under development. If it is in fact ready to ship, I think we clearly need an object oriented browse as part of the next interim release [if there is a ver 5.5 planned?]

            Yep, you are correct.

I got the impression that it wasn't quite complete. I seem to remember an interview with Cian in the Newsletter a while back, where Cian said he would complete the undelying (C+?) code that very weekend. Maybe at the conference they were still working in the UI aspect? I also remember Selwyn saying that v5.5 was no longer an objective. Hope Ken N. is right.
