Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bug Reporting

Is there a way to report bugs to Alpha Software? I see no official way of bringing a problem (or suspected problem) to Alpha's attention on the Tech support options page. I certainly don't want to pay for Phone support to report a problem. I know this forum is great for finding work arounds to problems, but if there is a clear problem, how do I bring it to someone's attention to get it resolved in future versions??

    thanks

    RE: Bug Reporting

    Bill,

This is a good place to start. If you feel you found a bug, it gives the rest of us an opportunity to confirm it is in fact a bug with A5 and not possibly related to something else. Since this board is monitored by Alpha support it will be taken care of as has many others in the past.

      RE: Bug Reporting

Essentially, whether you get any support at all depends on the whim of any one who happens to read your submission.

I have emailed Alpha for assistance, and to date received no reply. I have a 'bug' query posted at present, and I have requested direct help from the Alpha staff, but to date it remains un-acknowledged.

Indeed, someone MAY pick it up, but if they do not, then in my experience, there is no support available.

As for phoning, what do you do if you are not even resident in the U.S.?

        RE: Bug Reporting

        Brian,

Could you please tell us what this bug is that you have found that Alpha have not acknowledged. It has often been the case, that what was once thought to be a bug was infact a bit of coding that would not work the way the user was expecting.

          RE: Bug Reporting

I would say Scott is correct in that if the problem is not clearly a bug, it is best to present it here and see what others can make of it.

As for Brian's comment, it is 180 degrees the opposite of my experience that covers many years.

The question is always, is it really a bug, one that can be repeated on someone else's machine or is it just something wrong with your design, coding or hardware. When you run into a possible bug, where possible see if the same thing happens in AlphaSports. In any case, if it is a clearly repeatable problem (which even then doesn't necessarily mean it is a bug), all you have to do is zip up an example DB with a clear explanation of the problem and send it off to Selwyn Rabins, head of Alphasoftware. If it is a serious bug, they will fix so fast it will amaze you. That, at least, has been my experience.
