Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    %$#%^&&* Memory Leaks!!!

I realy Love Alpha but these memory problems are drivibg me crazy. I'm most disgusted with the problem of building a form or report and having to save with every change or field I insert. Sometimes I also have to close the form or report after saving and repoen to keep working. If not Alpha locks up and you loose everything. No other program is like that. I just spent an hour building a form and adding 11 fields when it locked up again and froze the computer. Of corse I lost all of my work again because of this. Report writer is even worse. This has been happening for a long time and a fix for this problem is long over due. I'm running both a win 2000 and XP machine with 512 Ram.

You must have some other issues. I have forms with a six tab tabbed subfom with over 200 fields total and can edit/add to those forms at will on a windows 98 700mhz 384 meg laptop and an xp similiar to your specs.

I did have problems previewing a report until I reduced the hardware acceleration of the video subsystem.
    There can be only one.

But have you built the form and added several fields before saving it? If I add only 1 or 2 fields and save there is no problem. But when I add several to a form or report it will freeze up. I have this problem on win 2000 and 98 also. We should not have to slow down hardware to make the program work. AS time goes on our clients will be getting faster and faster machines and we can't expect them to bring the computer down to run our software.

        Fred,

I havn't had any problems building forms in Alpha. I built one form that has 28 fields, 31 rich text objects, 1 image file ref field, & 1 memo field. I added about 26 fields before doing the first save, and added half the rich text objects before doing the next save. Other programs such as Acrobat, and MS Office take up lots of memory. Alpha takes a fair amount. Xp Home & Pro, Win 2000 all take most of 512 meg no mater what Uncle Bill says it will run in. My advice would be to add another 512 meg of memory. Should cost less than 150.00 even for a laptop.

Memory "leaks" are usually blamed on the program that finally crashes (or the one the "expert" knows the least about). However, many times that program is not the guilty party, just the last one on loaded. Win2000 and WinXP do a much better job with memory allocation than previous operating systems, but with the right combination of programs, you can overwhelm any computer.

Some things to check. See what loads on startup. Many Microsoft programs (and others) load some of their elements from the startup folder in the programs group on the desktop. These usually don't need to be loaded and can cause unneeded use of resources. Another real user is Outlook Express and other email programs. Many users leave these open in the background using lots of resources. Windows media player is another big memory user since it seems to load much of the output in a memory cache. If I leave music playing while I am using some programs, everything slows to a crawl.

Some graphics programs will take most of the resources. I have a computer with 640 meg ram and if I open Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, A graphics viewer and maybe one other program, almost any other program will either crash the computer or just stop working. Since I use that combination frequently, I have become very aware of memory issues.

My experience with Alpha is that is uses about the same resources as Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop. If you are having memory probelms, you should take a careful look at what otheres programs are running in the background.

I have had some issues like this in the past (XP pro). It turned out to be other apps I had installed that either "updated" DLLs or run in the background and try to filter adds and changes on the fly.

Some real memory pigs are: Virus protection filters like Norton Sys Works, Program Restore filters like GoBack.

Also make sure you have the latest build of A5 and be sure you are current with all the Windows Automatic updates. XP in particular is frequently updated to patch memory leakage issues.
