Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    executable?

Back in dBase days we could use Clipper, create an app then compile it and distribute the exe, user did not need dBase or Clipper to run it. Is this possible these days ??

    Bob,

The Alpha Five application you develop must be distributed to folks that have Alpha Five or the Alpha Five Runtime Engine to run it. Licensing arrangements are possible with Alpha to permit you to bundle the runtime engine with your developed application.

Other general purposed development platforms permit you to build self-contained EXE program files, but most of them rely in part at least on accompanying DLLs. The world has gotten a lot more complicated than it used to be.

      Thanks Tom.
Yes, we do live in a complicated world. Some things are not always for the better, just more time consuming and cumbersome.

Bob, it's true. The load on the developer has increased substantially, but most would agree that the interface for the end user has become much more intuitive and richer. The bar's been raised substantially. -- tom

            RE: executable?

            Bob,

I was alson into Clipper. Alpha does not let you create an exe like clipper and others did and do. You can create an exe with some other program to start the aplication that you wish. This has merrit and I do it constantly.

I have VB3 and why shouldn't I use my tool to enhance Alpha my way? I think it works much better than to have to worry about my startup getting messed up. It also allows me to have my own icon on the desktop.

            Try it.

              Dave,

Nothing about A5 prevents you from having a custom icon. Many do. The tools menu item to set up a shortcut allows you to specify a custom icon and splash screen.

As for a separate compiled executable, you can do much the same thing by creating a custom install routine, so what's the problem?

Meanwhile, however you deploy it, whatever you had to do got done quicker and cheaper in A5 than it would have been in VB.

At least this is how I see it.

                Bill,

Judging from other threads in this forum, I think Dave was referring to something else. Instead of using a simple Windows shortcut to the ADB file, which for some apps is too accessible, he prefers to write a little program in VB3 and compile it to an EXE. The program code does nothing but kickstart Alpha Five, with the right parameters and command line.

                  Tom,

                  Thanks for the correction.

I guess I still do not see the advantage VB3 offers since (in the alpha method) the parameters are stored in a startup text file which is out of harms way. I do agree that inserting the parameters in the shortcut itself is a pain and open to tampering.
