Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New PDF Xbasic reference manual

I very much prefer using the PDF version of manuals and am reasonably sure the new PDF version of the Xbasic reference manual would be a big improvement if I could use it.

    However:

    1. The table of contents NEEDS links to the pages, like the old manual had, otherwise the table of contents is virtually useless (can't even use Acrobat's way of going to the page number because, for example, page 35 of the main document is still in the TOC rather than in the document pages).

    2. It would be much better to single space the TOC (see more on the screen and it would not take up so many pages).

Yes, I know there is a chm version of the manual too, but I much prefer the pdf way of doing things, at least when there are TOC links like there was in the old manual.

I agree with Ray. I think the work being done on the manuals is fantastic but some tweaking could make a great thing even better.
One addition I'd like to see is a more complete index, perhaps with a how to section with how to listings (like in the chm I think). I am sure that users would also be willing to send in possible index entries if there were a way to do so.

    Thanks for the forum

To address your request for a PDF file with active links in the TOC and Index. I would like to produce one for you, but the tools from Adobe are incapable of doing the job. The book is just too large.

However, if you look at the table of contents and find that your topic is on page 159, you can select Document > Go to page ... > enter the page number > click OK. This will display the topic.

I think a good index is essential to a good reference book. I am chipping away at it day by day. You will see the most current results in the .CHM file and in the webhelp.

You wrote: "...the tools from Adobe are incapable of doing the job. The book is just too large."

Are you saying that if the book were shorter there could be links, like there were in the old pdf manual? Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you are incorrect. I just want to be sure I understand what the problem is, as I create pdf files with links and if there is an issue once they get to be over so many pages, I'd like to know about it before I try to create a longer document. If size is the issue, do you know what the limit is?

            Thanks

Of course this offset varies between documents. Thus, it is still hectic to get to the desired topic.

The TOC pages are included in the page count so this isn't necessary.

Stephen, I think they've fixed this... so no offset calc is presently needed. Maybe you need to d/l the pdf file again ?

You're right, Tom. I was looking at an older version.
