Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Display Calc Field Name ??

Is there a way to display the name of the calculated field in a report while you are in the expression builder for that field? Something similar to the way the report name shows while in design mode !

    Gary,

Where do you want to see the name of the calculated field? Once you have created a calculated field it is on the list of field names in the drop down list!

I think that would be a very nice little upgrade feature, Gary. Maybe Selwyn will think so too. He can call it the Gary Phillips Expression Builder Calculated Field Name Display.

Bubble help for objects is turned on. Perhaps I was not clear in what I am looking for. I know that the calculated field name is displayed in a list but while in the expression builder of that field, you see the words " Expression Builder " would be nice to show the name of the calculated field you are working on next to that just like you see the name of the report next to the words "Report Editor" with the report in design mode. Perhaps trivial but when you have several calc fields and get distracted that instant recognition of the field would be helpful.

            Gary,

Let me see if I understand this correct.

You create a calculated field. The you open the expression builder for that field. You want to see the name of the calculated field displayed int the title of expression builder. eg: Expression Builder - Calc->Gary_Calc_Field

            You need that because.
            A. It doesn't appear with F5 (Calculated Fields list)?
            or
            B. You can't remember the name of the field you are working on? :(

Keep in mind, the new calc name does not yet exist until the expression builder is complete and valid.

            Seems like overkill to me,
            Melvin

              B. Because I may not remember the name of the field especially if distracted and I often have many calc fields that are similar in content. I would not expect the field name to show until it was saved but would be there when opened to edit

                Hi Gary,
I understand what you're talking about. This would be a nice feature to have in the product.

As a matter of fact, Crystal Reports has this feature. When you begin creating a "formula" (calculated) field in Crystal, the Formula Editor displays the name of the field being created in the title bar as well in the formula field list...even though the field has not been created yet.

I know that sometime when I'm creating formulas I can get a bit brain dead and forget what field I'm working on...especially when a lot of fields need to and have already been created.

Just something to add to our "Wish List" I suppose.

Glad you understood. I was beginning to think it was just me!
As to a wish list, Is there a separate place to actually post a wish or does the Alpha group just scan this board ?

For many months now Alpha people scan the board daily. Still, there have been times (crunch time for releasing a new version?) when it would seem that Selwyn and his staff were too busy with other things. And in any case, I think a separate place for wish list items is a good idea even when they are regularly scanning the board.
