Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Suggestion for v6

On the drag and drop list a button to set the field order to natural, alphabetical, or by field type would be useful. some of my tables have a lot of fields and it can be hard to find them at times.

    Just a suggestion.

    RE: Suggestion for v6

Suggestion for update/patch to V5, or for V6:

It would be great to be able to drop an MS-Word like table into a form/report and set certain boxes to text-labels and those adjacent to them as the fields the text-labels are identifying - this would greatly simplify developement and allow for more appealing forms/reports.

    Your thoughts?

      (1) It will be nice to add more fields to existing embeded browse after it has been created. Right now the only solution is to delete the embeded browse & recreate it from the begining.

      (2) The practice of a feild rule defined for a table in set or stand alone table being same feild rule for that same table in any other set that the table is used is bad. Alpha four handled this field rule area better. Please fix this.

      (3) When defining a field rule for a set, all tables in a set should be available to be used in a calculated rule not just the table that has focus. Right now only the parent table enjoys this privilege. Again Alpha four handled it better.

      (4) Developers should be given the option to change the Alpha Five title that shows up on some warning messages. For example when user makes changes to a record & decides not to save it by pressing ESC or Cancel from the tool menu.

The list of changes are plenty. I dont have the time to list them all. I know & hope that the Alpha team will listen to there loyal users & make V6 beter.

Nothing personal but I completely disagree with number 2. I believe a field rule is a field rule is a field rule. Otherwise it can cause to much confusion and lead to errors. I'd prefer to see it remain as it is. (How about "Sometimes you drive your car on the right side of the road in the USA and sometimes on the left and sometimes we don't care??" Result - mass confusion.)

Can it (multiple field rules) be done successfully? Yes, if the developer is very careful.

Is it a good idea? I don't believe so.

As far as I know, A4 was the only database that has ever allowed that kind of thing and I believe it would now be considered bad practice by most database designers.

I think #3 should solve any issues. I wasn't even aware of issue #3 because I normally just build lookup() functions manually. It really isn't very difficult with v5's auto-fill.

          Rawlings,

I don't think your first numbered point is accurate. You can insert new columns into an embedded browse using the drag / drop list while working with the form in design mode. -- tom

How about a true SQL engine without having to create new "sets" for everything.
