Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Fonts

Windows installs some "standard" fonts on each PC. When you open the fonts dialogue in some other Windows apps (like a wordprocessor or Access) you'll see them flagged with either a TT (TrueType) icon, a printer icon (since they're resident in the printer) or blank. The latter are the ones supplied by MS as the "standard" fonts.

(Open up WordPerfect, for example, and look at the font list)(interestingly, my copy of Word DOESN'T show these fonts in the font list!)

They are, on my system (WinNT sp6a):

    MS Sans Serif
    MS Serif
    Courier
    Fixed Sys
    Small Fonts
    System

NONE of these show up in form design for Alpha, although they do appear in the fonts dialogue box if you want to create default fonts for your forms.

On the other hand, A5 lists three fonts that are neither TT nor printer fonts--Modern, Roman and Script.

How do I get A5 to list the fonts like MS Sans Serif? I prefer it to Arial.

    RE: Fonts

I'm running XP pro and all my fonts TT and the rest show in the Alpha 5 Form design Object properties Font Tab. If yours do not it may be that NT has located some fonts in seperate locations. In XP all the fonts are in the windows/system/fonts folder. I believe this is the default location that A5 looks for fonts.

Make sure the fonts you want to use in A5 are in that folder.

          RE: Fonts

          Marc:

Here's the answer so far .

All of my fonts--those that display and those that don't--are in c:\WinNT\Fonts.

All of the problematic fonts are "screen fonts", not really TrueType ones with file extensions of .FON (instead of .TTF for TrueType and whatever for Adobe).

Modern, Roman and Script are "all resolution" versions. The ones that don't show up in the field font list are "screen resolution-dependent" versions, e.g., if you open up the Fonts utility from the Windows control panel and look at the information on the font, you'll see whether it's True Type, Adobe Type 1 or the screen resolution.

All of the ones that don't appear on the A5 font list are, on my system, flagged as the VGA version.

Can you check what your MS Sans Serif Screen font's resolution is?

It seems to be an A5 issue. Is there a place to go to report problems like this other than here in the Forum?

Anyways, I think it's bedtime now.

I sent a Fonts.zip to your email address. It's 9 MB so I'm hoping you have a fast connection.

                Marc:

Thanks for sending the file--there were a couple of other nice fonts in there that I didn't have .

The answer, for anyone who needs it next time, is to locate the TrueType file MICROSS.TTF; this is a TrueType version of the screen font "MS Sans Serif". Once you've installed that font, you'll be able to use it as a fully scalable font in all your Windows apps, and the font selection boxes that search for TrueType/Adobe fonts ONLY will show it.

The font name in the font selection box is "Microsoft Sans Serif", not "MS Sans Serif". The latter is the "screen font" version and it has a limited number of point sizes.

                Thanks again!
