Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    2 versions on one computer?

Does anyone have a way to make the Home Edition and Professional Edition of version 5 coexist on the same machine?

Whenever I switch between editions, I have to re-enter the license number for that edition.

    Thanks,
    Ray DiFazio

Good question, Ray. I was about to post a similar one. This will obviously be an issue for developers.

While we are at it, can someone confirm whether or not there is any conflict if running the full version on one computer and the home edition on another computer on the same network? (I suspect not but it would be nice if someone could confirm it.)

At least now I know that it's a real problem!!

RE: 2 versions on one computer?

I have A5V5 full, version, and A5V4.5 running on the same computer without any major problem. Also, A4V6.2.

The only annoying element is that I have to directly load an adb file in A5V5 or it tries to load in A5V4.5.

We are not on a network.

          Thanks James,

I, also, have multiple versions of Alpha 4 and 5 running successfully on my machine. This, however, appears to be a different issue.

Yes, I reread the thread. However, I am glad the subject came up. I will be carefull not to use the wrong build.

RE: 2 versions on one computer?

you can have both home and full edition on the same machine, but it is a bit of a pain in the neck because both products share the same registry key.

so when you enter your a5home edition license number, it will overwrite the a5full edition license number.

that means that when you start a5full edition, you will have to reenter your license number.

then, once you do that, and you start the home edition you will have to reenter your home edition license number.

My understanding is that both versions use the same registry keys, so they both can't be active at the same time. You may have to use some dual boot system, which obviously adds complication.

If you are using an NT based OS (NT, 2000, XP), you can set up different users, like "RayHE" and "RayDE". That way, there will be two different registry trees.

Another possibility is to keep two registry trees around and manually rename them when you want to test under HE.

Thanks for that insight. I didn't think about that possibility, but that would be a simple solution.

                            Hi All,

My problem is similar, I have A5V5 and A5V4.5 loaded. I also have shortcut icons on my desktop for the various apps that I am working on, some developed in A5V5 others in A5V4.5. Now the problem, when I click on an Icon, regardless of which version it was developed in, it comes up in A5V5.

                            Happy days ahead,
                            efs

Ed, change your icons. I can almost guarantee that the only thing the icons point to is the .adb file. This is a very limiting method: (a) it will always open with the last version of A5 that was installed, (b) you have no control over the splash screen, window title, icon, and other options.

The better icon will first start the version of A5 that you want to use and send the adb file as an argument. Something like this:
                              "C:\Program Files\A5v5\Alpha5.exe" "H:\A5v5\CustomerA\AppName.adb" -title="Customer A's AppName" -nosplash

NOTE: You MUST put double quotes around any portion of the command that has blank spaces. I believe you must also put quotes around the name of the title even if there are no spaces.
