Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dialog question

    Good Morning,

    Gotta question thats been "bugging" me. From my Main menu form i have a button that opens a dialog box whoms use is to enter a new client. The script is quite long it goes as follows:

    1. Dialog for entering vague information (client, address, etc.

    2. Upon pressing O.K. It opens to the client page of the newly enter client. It is supposed to go to the last record entered. (which is the one in question)

    3. Field rules assigns the new client a customer id vie auto increment.

    4. Now since we used fetch last record we should be at the correct client so the new customer id is placed into a variable. This variable is used to set the customer id values into the following tables.

    5. There is a another dialog that askes the user if you want to enter system information.

    6. If yes, another dialog pops up that is used to enter information that will be stored in five seperate tables.
    It is a tabbed form with a tab for each table.

    7. Pressing Done button the information is inserted in to the correct tables with the CORRECT customer id. This is imparitive other wise there will be just lost records floating around.

    The script seems to work perfect most of the time. a little jumpy but i can do with that. The rest of the time when the client form is opened it will not go to the correct record.
    Which messes up the whole script because the wrong id is inserted into the variable.

    I've tried refreshing before the form is opened and used Client_Information_Form.fetch_last().

    is there a better way to get this to work correctly. I've been working on this a LONG TIME and would love to polish it up. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Sorry for the long explanation.

    Thanks
    Brian

    RE: Dialog question

    Brian,

    Is it possible that you have a filter or querry running when your problem occurs? Thats what it sounds like to me.

    Try clearing all filters and querries at the beginning of your routine and see if that straightens things out.

    Hope this helps.

      RE: Dialog question

      2 things:
      1.- When you enter a record using the table.enter_begin() or the Record.add() it will not honor field rules, I am not sure if that applies to the autoincrement ( I will test it today)

      2.- I recommend for you to assign the customer_id using the
      increment_value() function. This will make your life easier.
      this 6 lines of code can fix your problem.
      just make sure that you have an ascending index on customer id.

      tbl=table.open("Customer")
      tbl.index_primary_put("customer_id") 'index on customer_id
      tbl.fetch_last()
      id=tbl.customer_id
      id=increment_value(id) 'kaboom you have your next id!
      tbl.close()

      hope this helps

        THANKS Scott,

        You were right, there was a query on a button that opens the system information form on my client page. So I just put show all records on the button after it opens the form and everything seems to be working great.

        Thanks again
