    Default Network Slow

I am networked with a server running 2000 and have 100mps connection speed. When running runtime for data entry from a new Pentium4 machine with XP Pro, it takes up to two minutes after data entry before the next record can be entered. Any sugestions?

Are you running Network Optimized? Normally network operations should be almost instantaneous. Is the data entry screen running on a set, or one of the tables in a set? If a set is set with referential integrity turned on, that can slow operations considerable as integrity will lock the child records if the parent is in change mode.

Jerry: Thanks for the reply. Until recently acquiring A5V5, my experience was limited to setting up a very simple DB with Alpha 4 years ago. What I did was:
    1. Created a DB (sales.adb) and defined all fields.
    2. Created a table (slaessearch.bdf).
    3. Created a form for data input called Data Entry Form (creative, huh?).
    4. Put data in the "Data Entry Form", tested it, printed it out, etc.
    5. I set up a folder on the server where I have this stuff.
We are now entering data into the form. After entry and clicking "save file", it takes minutes before you can create a new record.
I trust this provides the info you requested. I presume I am running on a set, but maybe a table in a set. I don't know anyting about setting referential integrity, child or parent records.
    Thanks

It sounds like you are running a simple table and accessing the whole database across the network. However, a few minutes to save a record doesn't seem correct, even without network optimization. Can you zip up the database and post it with some sample data? Maybe someone can get an idea about why it might be so slow.

You should read the documentaion about network optimzation. That should speed the process considerably. There have also been newsletter articles about it.

Thanks for the suggestions Jerry. Will work on it next week after my head clears!
