Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Saving invoice totals to Header

    I have been using the following code to save an invoice total to the Order amount field in a table called orders.
    I use it on an onpush event on a button.
    I would like it to execute automatically before I enter a new invoice. I tried it on an Can SAve Event on the invoice form. But I can't get it to work.
    Any Ideas?

    dim hdr as p
    hdr=table.current() hdr.change_begin() hdr.orderamt=Total.value
    hdr.change_end(.t.)total.refresh() 'refreshes the total field in the form body
    end

    try the OnSaveRecord event for the table, or the OnSave event for the form.

      Jeff,

      I usually do this as follows, which always works for me:

      If the orderamt field on your form is called orderamt, then put this in your button:

      orderamt.value=total.value
      parent.commit()

        I don't want to use a button.

          neither one works. Returns a "0" value in orders.
          Any other ideas?
          Thanks.

            First, see if you can get it working in a button. Once that works, you can use the Btn.push() method in any event that will push the button behind the scenes ...

              Jeff, the message board messes up our formatting sometimes so it's hard to tell if your script is an exact copy of what you have in your database or not. If it is, then you need to break it into many separate lines. Right now you have lots of commands on a couple of lines. Needs to be one command per line. Ok.

                the OnSaveRecord event for a table fires after the record is saved. if your form is based on a set, however, then the parent record is saved *before* any detail records are entered. you can't make the invoice total be saved automatically to the parent record by coding something for the parent's OnSaveRecord event, because at that point your Total field probably has a 0 value in it.
                there are examples of how to post from child records to parent records at www.learn alpha.com, also in Application Programming in Alpha Five, and probably also in Alpha Sports. You have to write some code for the OnSaveRecord event for the *child* table.

                  Gary,
                  Thanks for the help.
                  Yes it does work on a button.
                  I was thought that there might be a command that would push the button behind the scenes.

                    Jeff,

                    Why don't just put the code in a button, hide the button, and then use the Btn.push() method to push the button behind the scenes ...

                      How do I set up the button.
                      I can't find an example of btn.push()
                      Wnere do I put the button name?
                      Example please.

                        Go into the properties of the button and name it something that makes sense, like CalcBtn. Then, the Xbasic to push this button "behind the scenes" is simply:

                        CalcBtn.push()

                          My invoice SUBTOTAL field is setup as a calculated field in the field rules. I use a DBSUM function to accomplish what you're trying to do.

                          DBSUM("invcline","invlin1",INVNO,"linetotal")

                          To get the function to fire, I put the following on the OnArrive, OnDepart, and OnRowchange events of the browse line items:

                          t=table.current()
                          t.change_begin()
                          t.change_end(.t.)

                          This suggestion came from someone in the message boards.

                          Mike
                          Thank you,

                            RE: Saving invoice totals to Header

                            There is a Post field rule that does what you want. You would put this rule on the invoice items table to post the amount to the invoice header. This rule handles changes and deletes to invoice items.

                            There is an issue with the post rule when a form displays both the invoice items and the invoice total. If a detail item is added or changed, the correct value is posted to the invoice total in the table, but the form does not show the updated invoice total. Refreshing the form or object does not show the new value. The workaround I use is to create a calculated field on the form and set it to the value of invoice total. Then display the calculated field. The calculated field automatically shows any updates to the total. Go figure. Alpha has said they don't consider this a bug, so I have to call it an "issue".

                            Bill.
