Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Distributing Current RT Version AGAIN

What do I need to do to get a clean setup.exe RT file for distribution? I've read other messages and if I understand, I would have to distribute both the original setup file and the patch and somehow get my new end user to open the RT, close the RT, then run the patch. Then use the app. NOT!!!

I have a CD w RT dated 2002. I want to distribute RT with my new app. I don't have a CD or setup.exe file with all current fixes to RT. I have updated RT on my development machine with latest patch, but understand I can't just copy the files in the A5V5RT folder to my end user's machine without incurring dll error messages....

My installation program had been installing my files and automatically triggering the installation of the RT from the setup.exe file I got on the CD, then opening my app. All very simple if it weren't for the patch issue.

Hi Linda, I think this might help.

Start your app in the runtime, give the control panel focus, go to the main A5 tool bar under Tools/Utilities/Create an install package.

      Linda,

If you applied the current patch to your development machine the install maker will use the updated files to create your runtime application. You can only access the install maker from your full version of A5.

If you are using a 3rd party install maker then you need to copy all the runtime files from the runtime directory. Again if the patch has been applied all the files will be the current build.

The only time you would need to apply the patch is if you installed runtime on a users machine from the original CD.

From my experience, I use Wise InstallMaker for installation. I just copy the entire runtime directory. I have not had any problems. Crossing my fingers.

RE: Distributing Current RT Version AGAIN

So, I have spent 2 days playing with my RT, trying both the A5 install maker and Setup Specialist making copies of just what is in my RT folder after the most recent update...

If I use the A5 install maker, I can't control things like user passwords, and shortcuts, but the app file recognizes that it needs A5V5RT to start.

If I use Setup Specialist and simply copy the files, when my app starts on a new machine, it doesn't know where to look for the Alpha5.exe. I cannot expect my users to have to figure this out.

Which means I have to learn yet another geeky thing (hopefully from you???) about how to tell my app to find the A5 execute file. (If I used the original A5V5RT setup file, something in it gives the answer.)

Also, in my "Current Build" folder, there is a large zip file. Do I need to include that for any reason when I distribute RT files?

I really think the guys are losing track of their target market when they don't address this issue. With Setup Specialist, all I have to do is enter my license number and they will download the current version of the full setup file. Why can't Alpha do the same thing with the RT???

            Linda,

Do you have the proper paths in the shortcut for your application??

Where is the A5RT files in regards to your application files?

The big zip file your taling about is the runtime files that the A5 install maker created. You do not need that in the clients machine.

RE: Distributing Current RT Version AGAIN

I played around a little more - problem happens when RT files are in same folder as app files and the shortcut points to the app. (I can't expect user to open A5 and then go find the app.). When I separated them, the app was able to automatically find the RT and open fully the right way. I hope. I've still got to test it on a virgin machine.

Thanks for tip on zip file. I thought they looked familiar.

Linda, try this. I copy the RT files and my app into one directory. Next, There is a fantastic install generator program on the internet called Astrum Installer, I bought it a few months ago for $28 and it beats anything in the market including Install Shield. It's simple to use, no learning curve, Takes seconds to set up, and you can tell it where you want your shortcut to go, what commands it needs to execute. It's the best thing I've ever seen and I'm a long time Install Shield user. I distribute 4 applications with it all over the country and It's flawless.
