Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Upgarding to latest version of alpha

I am running a business program I created with alpha 5 ver. 3 on a pentium
200 with win 95. It has run great for many years. I would like to upgrade to
a new computer with current technology. Will I have compatablity issues running the same software on the older version of alpha, or should I upgrade to ver. 5
If I upgrade to ver 5, will my software run on this. Also whats the best operating system to run ver 5 on. Everything works fine now, so I dont want to open a new can of worms, yet I know my system is ancient! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Fred

    Hello Fred:

Upgrading to version 5 is an excellent idea. Not only will you find its a more reliable and stable product than ver 3, you will discover a vast array of exciting and useful new features / options are available. Of course youre probably thinking, why do I need them if everything is working fine right now? Good question, but sometimes you dont realize what you can do until new features are in fact available.

There are no guarantees, but just about everything you created in Ver 3 will almost assuredly run in Ver 5. The only problem is the reverse, once you move your app to Ver 5, it may not run properly if you decide to go back to the older version. But then again, why would you want to do such?

As for the operating system, I would go with either Win 2000 or Win XP. They both use the same core operating system, which is far more reliable than Win 95, 98, or Win ME. It also eliminates that old memory bugaboo of system resources, thats strictly a result of the DOS-Windows kludge of Win 95, 98, and Me.

If you can find Win 2000 at a cheap price, I would definitely choose that option. Why? Win XP is in fact Windows 2000 with some fancy interface and audio features added. Most people dont need the fancy interface, but everyone benefits from the rock solid stability of the Win 2000 operating system. Just remember to download the latest upgrades/patches via Windows Update.

Fred, I am not sure that you could ever go back to version 3. I played around with A5v5 from A5v4.5 and if I remember correctly, once you edit reports, they will not run in the earlier version. It took me quite a bit of adjustments to get my database to work within A5V5, but then I had created my own woes as I did not have a good grasp of basics. The upgrade forced me to cleanup my problems.
You can try the free download and use a copy of your database in a new subdirectory and see how it goes. The pentium 200 may be a little slow for your liking.

RE: Upgarding to latest version of alpha

I don't know of any issues that would prevent you from running your version 3 database under XP, but whether you decide to keep version 3 or update to version 5, the key is to keep your current version working while you test A COPY of your application in the new environment to make sure there are no nasty surprises.

Alpha worked long and hard to make sure old apps would work under version 5, but there are certain unavoidable conflicts a very small number of users have encountered in making the transition. Alpha has increased the number of "reserved words" in version 5, and people who had used those words for field names or other purposes in earlier versions found things didn't work right with version 5. Alpha also tightened up syntax checking in XBasic, and a few users found that old XBasic code which worked without difficulty in earlier versions of A5, started producing errors.

If you want to give version 5 a fair evaluation, load it up on a machine with enough oomph to make it go. I've used it since it came out on a 300 MHz Pentium II machine with lots of memory and HD space, and performance (primarily in design mode) was leisurely. I recently replaced that machine, and the performance difference with V5 is considerable.
