Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    WHAT am I doing Wrong?

    I'm TOTALLY frustrated!!

I've tried this many times before and I just cannot get this to work, no matter what I do.

The ONLY way I can update a customers application is if I copy ALL the file to my computer, make the changes and copy the files back.

I've tried and tried and tried using the backup and restore utility in Alpha 5 and it JUST DOESN"T WORK!! At least not the way that I think it should work or the way that I would like it to work.

I end up with corrupted or missing forms which I can't even open in design mode. I believe I found that I can overcome this problem by doing TWO restores in a row.

But if I do a backup with all the files with the exception of the data files, I end up losing all the indexes.

I've tried doing a complete restore of all the files and then copied the customer DBF files, rebuild the indexes, and then open the application. Again, and the my indexes are missing. That means I have to go in and re-define all the indexes.

This was SO SIMPLE in Alpha 4. I'm hoping and sure that it is simple in Alpha 5. But for some reason, the solution for me is like oil and water.

Can someone steer me in the right direction. People talk about sending file to customers to update their applications. That scares the H#%& out of me.

    Ron,

Tom Cone gave this advice to me when I was having similar difficulty. Perhaps it might help yoour situation.

    Ken,

I would arrange things the other way around.

After backing up his entire database (not just the DBF tables), I'd copy the updated application files (everything except the DBF, FPT and CDX files) on top of his files.

If he just copies his DBF files on top of yours, all of your indexes are probably out of synch with his tables. My guess is that if he immediately rebuilt all his indexes the compact would proceed more smoothly. At minimum he needs to copy his DBF, FPT and CDX files on top of yours... and this assumes you haven't built any new indexes or modified table structures.

However, a compact changes his data files. Records marked for deletion are physically removed. This is why I prefer to do updates the other way around. I don't think it's good practice to force the client to change his data files just to update the app. In my opinion they should be changed only when the client wants to change them.
