Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cant change the default Path in operations

Why can't you change or select the path to the data when creating an append or posting operation? I have an application that I've built in a directory C:\Inventory. The operations look to that path for the data. If my end user installes the app in a differn't directory other than C:\Inventory the operation won't work because it still lookes for the original directory. This was not a problem in A4. This makes building applications very difficult if you can not creat operations with just the data files and access that data no mater what directory it is in.

i don't see why you say you can't change the path.

you certainly can. i would like to see your app to see why you think that you can't.

RE: Cant change the default Path in operations

When you create a new operation, in my caes the app is in the directory C:\Inventory, the default path on the "Master table side is c:\Inventory. I can change the transaction path to the name of a table on the transaction side to any directory on the computers system on my development machine.
Lets say in this case it's currently C:\Inventory on my machineor maby c:\data. What happens when you install the app on a customers computer on the H: drive in the directory H:\Inventory2. If I've built the application around the path C:\Inventory and the app is installed on another machine on a totaly different drive and directory name does the operation look for the default path C:\Inventory for the table for it's data or will it simply look for the table name specified in the operation in what ever directory it is installed in? My app is installed on many differnt machines in many different directories.
This is where I'm having trouble understanding the path statement.

RE: Cant change the default Path in operations

I guess what I realy need is to know that when I create an operation such as Post or Append that it will use the table name that I give it reguardless of what Directory it is installed in.

          Fred,

Have you considered placing the path and source table name in a variable, and then passing the variable to the operation instead of hard coding a particular path into the operation ? Your script could build the string in the variable using information from each machine that it may be installed on.

            Fred,

Alpha has no way to intuit where your user may have stored the source files for your operations. It can check the default directory, the directory you specify in the operation itself, or the directory you pass by reference using a variable. Does this make sense?

              Fred,

This is where the use of the 'Aliases' under View, Settings.., Aliases comes into play.

On your system, you would create an Alias called
[data] with the path of c:\Inventory\ .
On the Customer system, you create the same alias, but give the actual path as h:\Inventory\ .

Then when you create the operation, Replace c:\Inventory\MASTER.DBF with [data]MASTER.DBF . Bingo, the path is now resolved on oth yours and the customer. You might also want to make an alias for the transaction table path.

              regards,
              Melvin Davidson

RE: Cant change the default Path in operations

That is exactly what we do in our Social Services Application. I define the network path, drive letter, local path, and numerous other variables the n put them into the addin_variable space so that they can be used everywhere. This has saved us an incredible amount of grief. See my article in this months newsletter.

                  What I've learned about Path

Thanks for all who have replied to this question. I've learned thru experimenting that the path that you see in the operations tab when setting up a post or append are there to show you where current files are located on your system. This does not hard code the path for the C:\ path into your application. I installed the application on another computer in a new directory and it worked great. I send a file out to my clients each month with new data to be both appended (Unique) and posted. the app looks for the table name in the current directory where the app. is installed and not at the path on the original development computer. Many of my clients install the app in a variety of locations and paths on thier machines, hence, my concern.
