I am a new user of Alpha5-v5. I have used Lotus Approach to build a pedigree database and am interested in the flexibility that I think I can get from Alpha5. I have limited experience in databases in general.
The Approach database consisted of one table (6+meg of data)and 30 alaises of that table. The structure is as follows:
|----dogs4(sire) etc.
|---- dogs2(sire)
| |--- dogs5(dam) etc.
dogs(main table)
|
| |--- dogs6(sire) etc.
|---- dogs3(dam)
|--- dogs7(dam) etc.
The table has two alaises joined to it and each alais has two alaises joined to it. The field for joining each is sire (numeric)to idno(numeric)and dam(numeric)to idno.
When I tried making a set in Alpha5 that was arranged the same way. Table dogs-child1,child2;
child1-child3,child4 etc.
child2-child5 child6 etc.
When I made the complete set the program crashed with the error "not an open table". Also if I make just part of the set, Alpha5 rearranges the way I join the tables.
I know I'm not doing something right. I have tried a number of ways but seem stuck as to how to make a set properly.
Is it possible to join the table to itself(children)the way and number of times I'm trying to do? If so, then can someone point me to the proper way?
Is there some better way that my limited knowlege has not allowed me to think of?
What the end result I want to be is a form that displays a dogs pedigree for 4 generations if this helps any.
Thanks,
