Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't Enter Data - Field Name Appears in Field

    Hi,

I've seen the answer to this somewhere, but I can't locate it. Please excuse me if I haven't described this clearly or used correct terminology, it's either very late at night or very early in the morning, depending on how you look at it, and my head hurts.

I have a very simple table which contains a field named "Location". The only place I seem to be able to enter information into or change this field is in the default browse.

If I drag/drop any other field and its title onto a form, I get a label object (the title) followed by the corresponding field object. When I go to Form View, I see the label and there's an empty "box" where data can be entered.

With this field, when I go to Form View I see the label but instead of being empty, the "box" contains the field name - "LOCATION". And I can't change it.

I can go to the default browse and enter data there, but when I display the form the data doesn't appear. It's like the field name is permanently glued in place.

I've checked field rules, properties, modal/modeless, everything I can think of and I'm stumped. The rest of the form works as intended - just that one field doesn't.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

RE: Can't Enter Data - Field Name Appears in Field

    Gary,

I think Alpha Five is having trouble processing form or field rule expressions that involve the LOCATION field. If the expression fails (because of syntax errors or because of scoping issues) the fieldname is substituted.

OPen the default FORM for the table or set upon which your custom form is built. Does the same problem appear? If so study field rules further, it's likely that's where the problem lies.

If the default form behaves correctly, then the problem lies in your form layout.

RE: Can't Enter Data - Field Name Appears in Field

      Tom,

This is strange, but it seems to be fixed.

Looked at the default form as you suggested. The field name did not appear where the data should go, but I was still unable to access the field.

Next, looked at field rules. My troublesome field did have a skip rule, but that shouldn't be particularly important as several other fields on the form have the exact same rule and they all work fine.

For the sake of argument (ok, out of desperation!) I deleted the skip rule for my problem field only, and it became available for use. However, it still wasn't right on my form. The fieldname label was there, but the "box", area, whatever for data entry was hidden - invisible until the field received focus, when it magically appeared. (And disappeared again when the field lost focus.)

I removed the fieldname and field from my form, then dragged them back on again. Tested and everything seemed OK, so I put the skip rule back in. Now, it all works like I want it to.

Don't understand any of this, unless something was somehow corrupted, but THANK YOU for pointing me in the right direction!

      Gary
