Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

ODBC Access - SQL 6.5 or SQL 2000

We currently have SQL 6.5 and will be changing shortly to SQL 2000. Is there any known problems with attaching these files to Alpha 5 version 5 or using ODBC to query and search the SQL databases through Alpha 5 version 5?

I can only address the ODBC Import Genie which has been tested and works well with both SQL Server 7/2000.

We will have SQL 6.5 until next fall. If you hear anything on how well Alpha 5 version 5 works with that through the ODBC connection please let me know.

I would suggest you test that on your system - If you don't have v5 you can download a 30 day trial from the link on the www.alphasoftware.com home page.

From our prior emails you indicated that you use the "ODBC import genie" - not the "attach SQL table" procedure. I seem to freeze up in both. When I go into the "ODBC import genie" I experience the following:

          1. Open the import genie.
          2. Select database type to convert - ODBC data source.
          3. data source - machine data source - paragon 32
          4. import genie could not recognize the sql database
that you are using - because using a user data source
(dsn) or a database type not recognized - select from
list below - I select MS SQL server
          5. freezes up.

Have we set up the wrong DSN connection or some other problem?

RE: ODBC Access - SQL 6.5 or SQL 2000

As far as I have been able to get:
            1) Attach SQL Tables
can attach and browse all MS SQL tables
can print from all MS SQL tables

cannot query/filter records - when I try to filter
records in print I get no records - when I try to
filter records in query I get the following error
            message - 37000: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]
[SQL Server][Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'dbo'

            2) ODBC Import Genie
            a) open the import genie
            b) select the database type to covert - ODBC data source.
            c) data source - machine data source - paragon 32
            d) error message - import genie could not recognize
the sql database that you are using - because using
a user data source (dsn) or a database type not
recognized - select from list below - select MS
            SQL server.
            e)long pause
            f) brings up sql tables.
            g) select 1 table - error message - [Microsoft]
            [ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1:
incorrect syntax near'['..error occured at line:
            7990]
            f) press ok - freezes up.

Use it every day with SQL 2000 with no problems.

                Hi Dale:

I'm having the same problem. How did you solve yours? I searched the forum but did not find any other situations like this. I'm running SQL 2000.

What does the Data Source in the ODBC Import Genie? e.g. mine is:

                  DSN=Northwind; UID=sa; PWD=; APP=Alpha Five ODBC Import Genie; WSID=JOHNDESKTOP; DATABASE=NorthwindCS

Also what is the prefix to the tables in the list? e.g. mine is: dbo.
