Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Intelligent Calc Fields on Report

I have several summary reports (no detail section) which have only two groups (call them FIELDX and GRAND).

Nearly all of the fields on this report are calc fields (defined in the report, not at the table level).

I need to create several versions of this report, all of which will group on a different field.

Now, as I've been doing it, I create the report with a grouping for FIELDX. Setup all of the calc fields and such. Then I duplicate the report, create a group break for FIELDY, move the fields from the FIELDX group footer to the FIELDY group footer, delete the FIELDX group, then MANUALLY change all of the calc field formulae to ...,GRP->FIELDY.

Is there a way to make this easier? In Approach, the calc fields could be set to group on whatever summary panel (group break) they were placed in, so you could effectively have just one calc field defined and drop it in several summary panels. I hate to keep referring to Approach, but in this case, it's the best example of what I'm trying to accomplish.

Put simply, is there a way to construct a calculated field that will "know" what group break it's placed in and calc accordingly?

    r.

    Roy,

    Interesting idea.

I don't know of any built in functions that will do what you describe.

You might try grabbing the group break field name in the OnInit event of the report. Maybe you can pass it to a variable, and use the variable in the calc fields ??? don't know, have never tried such a thing.

Have you tried using the DragDrop list and the genie that is available?

Drag the field from the list with the genie on and it'll ask what function you want to apply. Put it in the header or footer that you want and the calculation is done for you.

The only problem that I have had is determining if the genie is on or off. The icon is pretty small and difficult to read. But if the field just drops on the region and no genie appears, try it again after pressing the little lamp.

Well, Al, the problem with that is that the drag-n-drop fields come in unformatted.

Now I know I can drop the fields in (to define the calc fields), then delete the dropped fields on the report, then individually change my existing formatted fields to point to the new calc fields, but that kinda defeats the purpose.

Tom, I had though about using the onint and variables, but I haven't tried it yet.

Calc fields like this would definitely be a REALLY COOL feature to add to A5. Imagine being able to define a calc field such as:

        total(ledger->cost,GRP->AUTOGROUP)

And then being able to use that calc field in ANY group break on the report. For heavily nested reports, that could save a LOAD of time.

Perhaps the omniscient lords of alpha will see fit to check this out.

          I'd try the following:
After designing the first report sorted on field1 witrh a label of "field1" make a copy of the report.
In the new report in group properties change the sort expression to sort on field2. But leave the sort label as "field1". Hopefully the subtotal formulas will work without changes.

Good idea, John... I'll give that a try. It seems like that _should_ work, as the GRP->thingy uses the group name instead of a field name.

            Tnx!

RE: Intelligent Calc Fields on Report

              That worked! Went like this:

              1. create a report and name the group breaks in some generic fashion (e.g. Group1)
              2. create calc fields on the report. The formulae end up like ...,GRP->Group1)
              3. duplicate the report
              4. create a new group break (e.g. Group2)
              5. move calc fields from Group1 Hdr/Ftr to Group2 Hdr/Ftr.
              6. delete Group1 break
              7. rename Group2 break to Group1.
              8. finished.

The calc field formula don't change when Group 1 is deleted, so they still work fine for the new grouping.

While not quite as nifty as an automatically grouped calc field, this will SURELY save me some time setting up reports.

              TNX!

RE: Intelligent Calc Fields on Report

You shouldn't have to create group 2 etc. Changing the group expression of group1 while leaving the label "group1" should do it.
