Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime

I'm an A5 virgin and have just purchased a single user version of A5v5.

We want to "deploy" the database across our network, therefore I need Runtime licenses - correct?

Do I simply buy runtime licenses ontop of our single user version?

With the runtime, are all database files to be stored on the server and each client "points" at them?

Basically what I'm trying to ensure is that once something is changed say a report or form, I don't have to send "updates" to each user?

    Thanks for help in advance.

    RE: Runtime

    Craig,

Yes, you're on the right track.

You'll need the runtime engine installed on each workstation. They run locally, sharing the one database located on the 'server'. As changes and enhancements are made to the application it need only be updated on the 'server'. However, if you elect to 'network optimize' your application (and you should), you will need to refresh the local workstations an update to the server. Tools are included in the package to help make this easy to maintain.

      Craig

You will want to read the help information about Network Optimization.

      1. Open any database in Alpha and go to the control panel.

      2. Select Tools, Network Optimize from the menu.

      3. Click the Help button on the Network Optimize screen.

This will open a help file on Network Optimization. It does a good job or explaining what it is and what it does.

To answer your other questions, any user you wants to open a Alpha 5 databse must have an Alpha 5 program loaded. This could be a full version or Runtime. Normally, users will only have the runtime on a terminal since they don't need access to design tools. The server can use the runtime or the full version.

The terminals are normally created as shadowed databases using network optimization. The terminal is working will local copies of forms, etc, but the data is being accessed across the network.

If you make a change to a form on the server, the changee is not automatically made on the terminals. However, the terminal can be "refreshed" which will send the change to the terminal.

This is all covered in the help file.

        RE: Runtime

Our "server" is just that an NT server, so as with Access it's purely the data files that will sit on the server.

I, being the developer will have the full version and each user will have the runtime edition.

        Is this correct?

          RE: Runtime

Basically YES - as far as the executables are concerned you are correct.

          More comments on Network Optimize:

A difference between Alpha and Access is that Alpha uses various separate files for the application so all of these files will be copied to the workstation during an 'optimize' operation. Personally, I like this much better than the 1 file method (1 front end, 1 back end) that Access uses because I believe there are far few problems installing updates.

To clarify Tom's comments about network optimization:
Once installed, the application can be set up so the workstation will automatically force the Refresh Optimize whenever the server version is updated. The refresh does not have to be done manually. This means that the developer simply updates the server and the rest is handled automatically when each workstation user logs in.

Also, if you prefer to avoid making users go to the control panel to run the initial optimize (mostly an issue with applications distributed to remote locations), I have a free addin called Opt_net_v5 that allows you to create one button that will automatically run either a full optimize or a refresh optimize depending on whether you are running from the full version of the application (ie, you're at a workstation but you've accessed the full version on the server) or from a previously optimized version. The addin can be downloaded at www.aimsdc.net/Tips_Funcs/Opt_net_v5.htm and has just been updated today to take advantage of the latest changes in A5.
