Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XML Support

    Hi All

    RE: XML Support

    Ray:

Thats an excellent question that Ive asked before but never got an answer. Its been on my mind because XML seems as if its heading in the direction of becoming the universal Internet language for database applications. That may or may not happen, but XML compatibility is undoubtedly very important for the future of any database program.

One thing that caught my attention during the Alpha Conference was the relationship between Alpha Five and QuickBooks [i.e. Qlinker]. Why was that interesting? Because QuickBooks is apparently an XML based application. If A5 can seamlessly exchange data with QLinker, that makes me think the answer to your question just might be yes. At least I hope it is.

        RE: XML Support

there is already some xml support in a5v5.

there is an xbasic method that allows you to export a table to an xml file.

go to the interactive window and type:

        table.xml_export(

the bubble help will explain all of the parameters.

v6 will add additional xml support.

          RE: XML Support

Most interested in the XML export function in
          Xbasic.

Within the options appear [ L silent and L open ]

Silent is running without dialog boxes of confirmation?

Not sure about the "open" option.
Does this open the file after compilation.
If so , is this the default and what is the syntax
          to turn it off.

Is there an XML import function?

          Many thanks

            RE: XML Support

Now if only there was an "import xml" facility? Will this be available in v6?

            Regards

              RE: XML Support

both of the last two flags are logical arguments.

logicial arguments are either .t. or .f.

the open flag causes xbasic to do

              sys_open(filename)

which means that whatever application is associated with the .xml extension will open the file.

                  RE: XML Support

there is not going to be xml import in v5.

for v6, what i am hoping what we can do is go one better than xml import and let you open an xml file directly from within a5 and work with it just as if it were a native a5 table (of course the xml file would have to conform to a grid structure).

                        RE: XML Support

                        table.xml_export("customer","c:\myxlm.xml","firstname,lastname","bill_state_region = 'ma'","lastname",.t.,.f.)

open alphasports and paste this code into the interactive window and press enter.

it creates an xml file called "c:\myxml.xml" from the "customer" table. the fields that are exported (i.e. included in the xml file are "firstname" and "lastname". had i specified "*" for the fieldnames, then all fields would have been exported.

the records that are exported are only those that match the filter: bill_state_region = 'ma'. had i left this parameter blank, (or entered ".t.") all records would have been exported. .

the order of the records is "lastname".

the "silent" paramter is .t. so a5 does not report back after the export is done.

the "open" parameter is .f., so a5 does not try to open the xml file after it has been created.
