Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Search feature in Contact Manager Sample

I'm trying to add a search feature in my database based on the one found in the Contact Manager sample database. I've got most of the major functionality worked out, but have a couple of little things that I haven't been able to figure out.

When you enter the Contact Manager form, the radio button for "Name" is always marked. On my form, both my radio buttons are unmarked. So, how do I set the radio button default?

Also, the browses on the Contact Manager Form are always sorted in alphabetical order. Mine aren't. How do I specify the sort order for the browses?

Thanks in advance for the info!

    Charlain,

What do you mean by "marked"? The lil' red circle is black? Some things to check in the contact manager:

    1) The tab order or field order arrangement.
    2) The filter on the browse or if it's an embedded browse, is there a filter on the form?
    3) Is there any code on the browse? It might contain a filter.
    4) What is the default setting/s for the radio button/s?

    Othere may have better suggestions.

      Hi Ken,
      Thanks for the response.

By "marked" I mean the radio button has a dot in it :) Where in A5 do you find the default settings for radio buttons? I don't see it in the radio button's Properties -- maybe I'm overlooking it though.

I also am not seeing how they managed to sort the browses, yet, but will double-check your suggestions to see if I can figure it out.

        Charlain,

Embedded browses do not have a filter capability but you can set a filter on the form which contains the embedded browse. You can also create an index which will filter the records that becomes active when the form is opened. My preference would be to put the filter on the form.

If you create a browse in the Browse tab, that type of browse does have filter capability. While in design view, you may have to click the word 'browse' on the menu bar and then choose Properties.

I don't use that style of radio button but you can use the field rules to set the default expression for the radio buttons. Set it to (.T.). (Don't use the (), only the T with a . on either side. I'm not sure if that will put the dot in the button.

Others may disagree and/or have better ideas.

          Charlain,

The radio_button object is setup to display choices based on the value of a variable called 'search_by'. This is defined as a layout variable, of character type, and an initial value of 'last_name' in the design of the form. When the form first opens the variable 'search_by' has been seeded with the value 'last_name'. This corresponds to one of the choices for the radio button, so the black dots shows up where you expect it. To see this, open the form in design mode. Click Form menu. Click Variable sub_menu. Look for the variable, search_by.

            Charlain,

The OnChange event of the Search_by radio button manages the display of the last_name or company browses. (Yes, there are two).

Study the script there (onChange of radio button). You'll see that the script hides the current browse, sets a new index for the form, fetches the first record in the new sort order, and then shows the second browse on screen. This is a good script to study, cause it illustrates the power you have as the developer to manipulate the form and objects on the form, with simple scripts.

Thanks again, Tom! When I was troubleshooting the script for my database, I left the index part out. Just went in and fixed it, and it's working like it should now.

                  Hey Tom,

How do I go about setting the initial value? I tried to do it using the Object Explorer, but when I try to change "value" to "Name" and hit SET, it changes the LINE ABOVE "value" which is "text" to text=name instead of value=name.

I've made sure that I have the radio button selected on the form, and have value highlighted on the Object Explorer, but every time it changes text instead of value. Where else can I specify the initial value? AND/OR, what could I be doing wrong in Object Explorer to be unable to change "value".

                  Thanks,Charlain

                    Charlain,

                    Same as before.

                    Open form in design mode.
                    Click Form.
                    Click Variables.
                    Edit Value for search_by variable.

This should look familiar by now, right?
