Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha5 v6

I would like to no what kind of backend will be shipped with V6 regarding the database will it be true client/server backend like mySQL or MS-SQL or a file server backend like Alpha5 V5?

If I have to use a 3rd party database for true client server database what happens to the field rules ECT can they still be used

Will all database setup and coding be done in alpha or will I have to setup the 3rd party database in their GUI.

Does V5 or V6 support OLE I need this for a credit card transaction integration into are application what I am referring to is

Go Softwares PC Charge by the way you should call them and try to get a linker like QBooks this would be a grate asset for

Credit card/check authorization into an app.

    Thank you

      Hi Ken

Thank you very much for your reply

If we loose the field rules working with 3rd party database
We are loosing a grate asset in Alpha5 I was really hoping
That you would not have to use a 3rd party database for
      Client/server.

The Qlinker I was talking about for QBooks was an example
Of what they should come out with for
      Go Softwares PC Charge www.pccharge.com
"Sorry if I did not make this clear"

I emailed Mr. Robins today and Len at Alpha Software
Yesterday I have not got a reply back yet regarding this
Maybe they are very busy working on V6 and WAS I no
They get back to us quick.

        RE: Alpha5 v6

        Ray,
I can tell you what Alpha announced at the recent conference.

        (1) Back ends-- A5v6 will not ship with any back-end, but it will ship with hooks to any SQL back-end and it will also ship with native drivers to MySQL. You can download MySQL for your own use for free (I've done it). Alpha cannot ship it for free. I suppose if there is demand for it Alpha might ship MySQL with v6, but they would have to charge separately for it -- MySQL is open source but is not royalty-free if it is being used as part of a commercial package for resale.
        (2) Field rules -- As far as the developer is concerned, all you have to do to move from .dbf files to MySQL or another SQL database is to tell v6 that you want to "Upsize" your database and identify the back end you want to use. v6 will handle the rest. Field rules should still work--indeed, that's obviously one of the hard parts of the transition, and I'm sure that will occupy a lot of Alpha Software's coding time. In addition, v6 will enable you to define "form rules" which are field rules that operate at the form level. These will function much like form events but will require no Xbasic coding. So you could have a different set of field rules for one form and one set of users vs another form and another set of users. Of course, you can still use table-level field rules if you want to enforce rules for all users.

          Ray,

I haven't received an email from you, please try sending again, my email address is [email protected].

You will not lose field rules by using A5V6 in a client-server fashion with MySQL, Oracle, etc as your back-end. The back-end database will be seamless to the developer (and end-user), so you will not have to do without any of the functionality you have come to depend on.

I just want to clarify slightly on Peter's statement "it will ship with hooks to any SQL back-end".

A5V6 will connect to any ADO back-end. In addition to SQL servers, this includes other data sources such as Excel files, Access MDB databases, text files, etc.
