Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Embedded Browse Refresh/Resync

    Good morning,

    I have a form based on a 1:N set with an embedded browse. I have a button on the form which 1) appends a group of records from another database to the child of this set, 2) gets a key field value into variable (from the parent) and 3)updates the appended records with the key value.

    I'd like the records to show up on the browse after this operation - I've tried refesh object, refresh display, resyncing, F5 etc. and no luck. The records show up fine if I close the form and then re-open it.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

    John,

    I wonder if the script is running asynchronously?

    Often, when a script kicks of a separate process (like an append, or a global update), Alpha Five keeps running the script without waiting for the separate process to conclude. I'm guessing that Alpha is refreshing the browse object before all the other processing is concluded. I recommend you use the new xbasic_wait_until_idle function after each 'step' in your processing, especially the last one, which refreshes the browse.

      RE: Embedded Browse Refresh/Resync

      Hi Tom, thanks for your reply.

      I find no Wait_Until_idle() function, but I did play with Wait_until() function a bit... to no avail.

      The problem I think is that Alpha is not re-establishing the set link. Maybe because I am adding records with a blank key and then doing a global update to replace the blanks with a key? - Alpha is not showing the 1:N link for records just added until you close and then re-open the form. I can put a refresh or a resynch button on the form and it does no good. I can scroll through parent records and the child records will not show for the append just done (only for those parents that were added prior to the current loading of the form)..... until you close and re-open the form. Weird.

      Maybe I need to find another way to append these records? I am currently using action scripting.

            John,

            the function is

            xbasic_wait_for_idle()

            And it's not well documented.

              Martin,

              Where do you stick this code? I have the same problem and would love to incorporate this.

              Thanks

                well, say you have a button that runs a script. Add the code at the end.

                or at the end of what ever script that adds the records.

                if this doesn't help, describe the situation where you arte adding or changing records

                  RE: Embedded Browse Refresh/Resync

                  Ooops, I'm back from lunch and I spoke to soon.

                  Martin, before trying your code, the records would display occasionally, just by repeatedly appending.... so that may be what happened after I tried your code -- as it does not work now. Also, one time the records would display and I clicked on the browse and they disappeared again! So something else is going on - the Set linkage is still out of whack.

                  Tom, I completely missed the _xbasic_ part of that function - so will try again using it.

                  Philip, if you get it to work, lemme know! ;)

                  Thanks,
                  John

                    RE: Embedded Browse Refresh/Resync

                    I think I've got it working now. I've simplified the action scripting to: 1) gets a key field value into variable (from the parent) 2) appends a group of records from another database to the child of this set, using the key variable.

                    I also simplified a complex child Order - which may have been the true cause of the problem.

                    The browse updates fine without any refreshing or doing any table gets or fetches. Goes to show you the value of the KISS principal.

                    Thanks again for your help!

                      RE: Embedded Browse Refresh/Resync

                      For future reference, I've had pretty good luck with:

                      parentform.resynch()
                      parentform.refresh_layout()

                      The resynch seems to get the form back in synch with the new or deleted records and the refresh seems to 'repaint' the values in the form objects. (I'm not sure how technically correct that is but that's the way it appears to me.)
