Default new LEARNING CENTER tab on Home Page

    The Learning Center

The Learning Center page will be where Alpha Software places the resources that it believes will help the Alpha Five user and application developer. Initially, it contains reference documentation. It will eventually also contain demos, tutorials, and any other materials that our customers find useful.

    The Xbasic Reference

The Xbasic Reference has been revised as part of a continuing effort to make Alpha Five documentation more useful. The document includes many more functions and methods, and is organized and indexed to make it easier to find the information you need.

The new Xbasic Reference now includes the contents of the old Expressions Functions Reference, which is now obsolete.

The Xbasic Reference is available in three formats: as on-line WebHelp, as a downloadable Windows help file in .CHM format, and in printable Adobe Acrobat PDF format - divided into three books: Programming with Xbasic, Alpha Five Object Methods, and Xbasic Functions.
    • Xbasic Reference WebHelp (.HTM - 4/2/03)
    • Xbasic Reference Help (.CHM - 4/3/03 - 3.0 MB)
    • Programming with Xbasic (.PDF - 4/3/03 - 4.4 MB)
    • Alpha Five Object Methods (.PDF - 4/9/03 - 6.0 MB)
    • Xbasic Functions (.PDF - 4/3/03 - 6.4 MB)

    HI Richard,

I have downloaded the new .CHM file. How can it be attached to the Alpha Five application? or How can I activate this new help file from within Alpha Five? Or is it a separate help file I'll have to activate outside Alpha Five. Kindly advise. Thank you

    Regards

Excellent centralisation! The stuff on v6 is really interesting. You should call itpha-Omega not Alpha 5 as it can do nearly everything! Speaking of "nearly", will v6 have a beefed up letter writer & reporter, specifically something similar to the "Table" function on MS Word?

    Chris,

To the best of my knowledge, it is a separate file.

What I do is create an icon on the desktop to open it then drag the icon to the quick start bar at the bottom of the screen. (I don't know of any way to create an icon directly on the quick start bar.) This way it is always readily available - requiring just one click to open it.

    Richard,

I'd sure like a Books On Demand copy.

I was looking at the Programming_with_XBasic.pdf book and I think I found two errors; on page numbers 86 and 87, the example of how to include a password should not be preceeded with an asterisk, or it is treated as a comment. Also, on page 87, under the three shaded case sensitivity examples, the sentence that reads 'You can run a password...' should read 'You cannot run a password...'.

If you have downloaded the file, you can open it easily from within A5 with a simple function call. The function winhelp_show() will open the help file. The function requires the complete path to the file, and a topic. If you copied the file to the "books" sub-directory under the A5 program directory, this code would work

    winhelp_show("C:\Program Files\A5V5\Books\Xbasic Reference.chm","")

Note the topic is blank. Some value is required and a blank character value will open the help file at the top subject. You can add this function to any script or inline xbasic, so it can be added to a button, menu or toolbar.
